I have a question - I'm not sure this is the proper place to ask, so apologies if not. I live in Oregon, and I just watched to red-tails in a brilliant blue sky. The one above had its legs and talons extended - the red leg feathers were so brilliant in the sun - and it seemed to be diving at the one below. I only saw them for a few moments before they were blocked from view. Was a territorial dispute?

Do they keep adding to their nests, assuming they use the same spot every year? Can the nest ever get too big for the tree?
@PollyfishАй бұрын
I was worried about the hawk as soon as I saw him land. I wish they didn't have to adapt to us but I'm glad they do. They have so much to contend with.

Is the tag to track migration patterns? I had my class in the late 80s. Thanks for the mini-refresher course!

Banding birds is used for a variety of different goals, and yes, one of them is to be able to look at migration or dispersal patterns.

Beautiful! Who was his “companion.” What are the water sources along the front range?
@RaptorEducationFoundation2 ай бұрын
The closest "water sources" to this location are numerous gravel pits that have been filled with water, Barr Lake, and the Platte River. There are also a number of irrigation canals that cross the area. Not sure what your mean when you say "his companion."

@@RaptorEducationFoundation Sorry! There's a small bird to the left of the bald eagle in the long shots. I thought it was very brave, but then I remembered balds don't generally go for birds, I think. Are the gravel pits stocked with fish?
@RaptorEducationFoundation2 ай бұрын
@@Pollyfish probably a starling, and some of the gravel pits are stocked with fish, but lots of water fowl hang out on all the water bodies, and bald eagles also go for rabbits, prairie dogs, and they scavenge a lot! The little bird would be too quick for the bald to catch anyway.

I’ve actually heard Bald Eagles sneeze on the many live streams of nest cams. They make a quick puff of air and a brief “choo” sound. So yeah, the sneezing is similar to us, but not quite the same!
@laurachapman18296 ай бұрын
Much new information that I did not know. I thought that once they left the nest it was a done deal. It makes perfect survival sense to go back to where food was regularly provided. And the eagle parent, needing for the juvenile to hunt on its own, has to provide what we human’s call “tough love”. Very enjoyable video, but the narration makes a big difference in understanding what has happened before to provide context to what the viewer is seeing.
@RaptorEducationFoundation6 ай бұрын
Laura, thanks for the comments! Did you catch the sneeze?
@laurachapman18296 ай бұрын
@@RaptorEducationFoundation Yes, I think I did. It was towards the beginning of the video. I guess I was just more interested to find that juvenile had already left the nest and came back. I know not to compare their behavior to humans, however, I find the similarities interesting.
