I remember a Ces Hunter who came from Blyth to Cottam around 1968, as a Unit Operator. I had transferred from Dungeness A . Regards Terry Johnson in New Zealand

Oh- just how I remember it when we were staying with Granny and Grandpa. Wouldn't be surprised if my 6 year old self isn't somewhere in that crowd. Such very happy memories.

Few realise but Blyth Power Station was actually a test bed for coal fired generating technology. That world class innovative technology could be found all the way through the site. The power station was so important as a monument to British generating technology that English Heritage actually tried to get the site saved and turned into a monument of industrial heritage. Obviously costs were too much and so a full photographic survey was undertaken before the site was finally demolished. Frustratingly, English Heritage refuse to digitise or offer copies of that photographic survey. I should know - I've tried!

What's inside the big building that's left there now?

National Grid high voltage switchgear and transformers … close proximity to the coast requires a building to protect insulators and switches from salt corrosion.

I knew a miner from Ashington. He said “best smell underground was the smell of someone peeling an orange. Worst smell was, someone having a shit on a shovel!”

Sounds like something a thick inbred from Ashghanistan would say, they're all stupid and vulgar like that...

I remember one bright spark who brought down a wide neck vacuum flask full of fish and chips with plenty of vinegar on it ...... imagine that smell running by you when your are trying to eat your half melted cheese butties ..... Trust me, he never dared do it again !

Electricity is supplied from a national grid system which means power generated almost anywhere in the uk can moved to where it's needed. Most of the smaller coal power stations closed like Blyth, Stella and Dunston have been replaced by natural gas fuelled power plants, there has also been a big increase in the number of wind turbines producing energy.
@MBrady197012 жыл бұрын
So where do they get their power from now? Stella, Dunston, all huge power stations.....how do they replace this lost energy?
