you forgot to strip the old paint and clean the barrel before adding new paint.

In my experience, even the best high temp paint can't withstand extremely high temperatures for long. There could be some fairly new products out there I'm not aware of too. It isn't my profession, so I'm no expert.

Engine paint is only good up to 500 degrees F. VHT high heat paint would be better.

You did not burn or remove the original paint off the barrel before you put the high temp paint on. So the old low temp paint under the new paint burned off when it got hot taking the new paint with it.🤔

I have another old barrel to cut up and put inside for a liner . As I understand they burn through the bottom. E bay sells a grate for these because I plan to add some coal, but I may try furnace cement first somehow. Also I am putting up a small metal shed 10 ft from the house and HVAC tube w fan, into the basement. Will see !

Why the fuck are you wearing a skirt? And it’s not the paint failing, it’s the user failing to get the right product.

The paint failed because you did not burn off the old paint FIRST......you must assemble barrel stove, then light it and burn off all the paint that was on the barrel then repaint with extreme high temp paint.

Gotta burn the existing paint off first or you wont get adhesion with the hi-temp paint, and try using actual stove paint, fairly certain engine paint isn't rated for a 1000-1200 degree wood fire.

I have wasted quite a bit of money on various high temperature paints to paint my barrel fire pit and all of them peel off once steel gets red hot, which happens frequently on thin wall steel drums. Only difference is, those high temp paints don't emit vapors.

That's exactly why they sell stove paint, other than that you need to strip any old paint off the barrel prior to using the stove paint.

Good to know...I'm more concerned about why there seems to be smoke coming from the bottom instead of going out the top. This would be a disaster if it was used inside a shop or something.

A little tip: let the angle grinder blade do the work instead of trying to force it through. If the blade does have a crack or chip that is when things can go south.

Im sure someone touched on this already but here it goes. There are two things that are majorly wrong with the assembly and or construction of this stove. 1. The paint from the old barrel MUST be burnt completely off and the barrel NEEDS to be completely stripped and prepared for high heat paint. This process was skipped. 2. The barrel that you are supposed to use is a sealed barrel. I do not know if you could locate one or not, but that is the kind you are supposed to use. Aside from that everything looks fantastic. You took your time and made sure that everything was lined up and cut evenly. Hopefully you can get the paint issue sorted out and the removable lid doesn't cause you any issues. (that can always be sealed with stovepipe sealant if need be.

First of all, the directions for every barrel stove hit say not to ever use an open top drum as you cannot regulate the airflow/dampen down the fire. Second of all, block paint is rated to what, maybe 450 degrees. The surface of those barrels quickly exceed 800 degrees on an average burn. They'll see 1000+ if you're burning shit wood like pine. Btw...nice skirt there princess. Smh
