They don't "expire" if you keep them in the dark they will last YEARS. If you keep them in your room looking pretty in your where the sun light touches them, and hearts them up.... They will last a few months, they will smell "cooked" (off). I have a CHEAP bottle of Banana Republic Black Walnut that I tossed out in a dark drawer, and it still smells as good.

I think it also depends on the quality of the ingredients. Cheap designer or niche. I only buy niche when on discount. My amouages get better with age 👍

A. Superb video and clear cut to the point! B. I was wondering about bacteria and such? Don't they also have a role in advancing the expiration date of the fragrances?
@allenpost361611 күн бұрын
I believe for the vast majority of fragrances, microbes and bacteria will instantly die coming in contact with it, as the alcohol would zap them. Alcohol is the most widely used topical antiseptic.

Fun video. A good complementary topic for a future video might be exotic woods and resins. And cruelty to plants, of course... As far as I know, non-macerated (="fresh", in a sense) ambergris is still occasionally found in the intestines of sperm whale cadavers today, often still encapsulating indigestible parts of the whales' prey, mainly squid beaks. Before whaling was widely banned, sperm whales were hunted mainly for fat, but the ambergris was a welcome secondary product that was marketed to the cosmetics and food industries.

Great video without all the BS many of the other "experts" propagate. Congratulations in particular on not repeating the "bathroom humidity will harm your perfume in the bottle" myth. One thing to add about fridge storage is that this is fine for long-term preservation of scents you are not planning to use in a while. I store my more precious winter scents, vintage and backup bottles in a wine fridge or the basement during the hot season. Alcohol-based fragrances are usually cold-filtered as a final step of the manufacturing process, so there is little danger of ingredients precipitating at fridge temperatures - and even if they do, you can usually get them back in solution at room temperature. As a minor point, as I believe you mention in your other videos, most consumer fragrances these days contain only a few percent of natural components (essential oils, absolutes, extracts). Most of the concentrate (excluding the alcohol) of designer scents is made up of synthetic or highly purified aromachemicals, plus adjuvants and preservatives - which is a good thing actually because it ensures predictable batch quality, purity and stability. Many naturals have become impossible or too expensive to use anyway, for reasons of skin sensitization, toxicity, environmental impact, animal health and nature preservation, humane labour conditions, etc. Anyway, good stuff! Subscribed, liked, and still liking...

There's a difference between "shelf life" and actual fragrance life. I think of shelf life as the length of time a fragrance can stay on retail shelves. Actual fragrance life is usually longer. And much longer in most cases. There wouldn't be a market in vintage fragrances otherwise. And sometimes a fragrance can partially turn and still be acceptable. Sometimes a symptom of turned juice is not a "vinegary" smell, but a smell better described as like nail polish remover. I have bottles of the discontinued Tiffany for Men, first released in 1989. Most of them have that nail polish remover smell in the opening, but quickly settle into the normal scent profile. So I regard the transient nail polish remover smell as an acceptable patina.

Absolutely fascinating video. I love learning about where these strange ingredients come from, how they were discovered and collected. It's wild that many of these are something that smells awful at full strength but someone somehow decided to dilute it and found it actually smells quite pleasant.

EDIT: 2:42 - I fluffed my wording here (🤪😅) and would like to set the record straight… Maceration is the process of allowing a blended scent to settle and fuse together. The aging process I mentioned with Oud is actually known as ‘Maturation’, which is where an ingredient’s scent can change as it ages. This can happen after a product has been purchased but, as said in the video, is not something I would recommended waiting for. Apologies!

Of course, not ALL brands are this meticulous… It’s up to your discretion to decide which you *believe in* I suppose… What brands do you think are worth (or not worth) it?
