Hard not to play after this. Great video. Very touching story about your mother. My dad was suspected to have cancer and I felt this "shrinking" you mentioned. Thankfully, the diagnostic was negative. Just found out about your channel, and I've to say I love this kind of content. Love the quality content.

Fictional fear becomes far less effective when real life terrifying experiences have already taken you to the very limits of horror Take it from someone who knows

I don't think so. Because I played Firewatch and it was more like thriller and I wasn't scared at all. But it was a beautiful experience.

I said this to a friend who introduced me to Firewatch when it came out, and they looked at me like I was crazy. Glad to see some justification for how I felt about this amazing game.

Definately a "Games are Art" contender because I did not get the same experience. I went into the game being told it was a subtle horror game by people. At the start I was invested in the games story and after seeing the figure I was waiting for something....which just didn't arrive. After about 2 hours of playing I was regretably bored. I didn't feel like I was being watched because after also seeing some people drinking at the lake I just saw that figure as just some guy on a hike. So I spent a good hour just walking in some woods wondering why I was still playing. So much so that I closed the game, refunded it, and then didn't think of it again for 2 years until I saw this video thumbnail.

44:49 when I played I had a different feeling after talking with Dalilah and the fire, and the end of the mystery sure there was that disappointment but I felt... ready. When I the headset off and went out of daliahs watchtower and met the helicopter I took a deep breath and pushed the button to "go home" because I felt (and I believe that Henry felt it too) like I was ready to face my problems

I remember being 15 and my brother and I were watching a Let's Play of Firewatch together. I never finished that LP because it made me so unsettled that I didn't want to click play again, but like you say, the game never left my brain. I absolutely agree that it's a horror, and this video is such a great exploration of how and why! (I'm glad your mum got better <3 I hope she's doing okay now!!)

My favorite Horror movie is Aliens 1986 - 8.4 on IMBD That being said some might argue its just a Thiller movie. That being said Firewatch is for sure a Horror, the sense of unease you get as the story progresses until the crescendo or big reveal *chefs kiss*

it took me a while to watch this video, but i'm so happy i finally did. i've had it open as a tab for a while, and then yesterday when i wanted to watch it, i reached the first half minute before i saw the description. knew i had to go watch the beginner's guide first, and whoa. what an experience. it's a game i've been intersecting with a bunch the past many years, from it being recommended when i was watching presentable liberty videos, to seeing davey wreden on a stream with his brother, twitch streamer dougdoug, where he talked about the stanley parable, ultra deluxe, and also a bit about beginner's guide. the game woke a bunch of themes in me that i got to thinking about, but your video has added a depth of meaning to it all. a bit ironically so, i'll admit, the way our (everyone experiencing the game) interpretations of the game expand the fictional version of coda in each our own minds. i got here from your firewatch video, which i found because it was recommended at a time when i had been thinking about the game again for a little while. something about your way of presenting ideas is really compelling, and i feel like that video and this have been amazing mind cleanses - sometimes with video essays or anything similar, it can feel like i'm just going through the motions of consuming more content. but, your videos are really digestible. a nice grouping of ideas, where they might go on for a little ramble, but they have the space to settle. i don't know where i'll be tomorrow. i don't know where i'll be a year from now. not in school, despite your encouragement, but i know i'm never done learning. i've found more and more disadvantages the past few years of making a long term plan for my life and comparing myself to it. i've found the most happiness in things i could never have expected. so i've been trying to pursue my life one day at a time. maybe there's a grand meaning to all of this. but maybe, there's no meaning at all, and we just have to do what makes us happy in the moment. i don't think this video will revolutionize my life or completely upend it, but i do think it's another brick on the road i'm paving. we are all shaped by what we experience, and i'm glad to be experiencing the creativity you've put into this world :D

I hugely appreciate this comment, and you've said some excellent things in that last paragraph, 'i know I'm never done learning'. This is the attitude that will take you further than any lifeplan that can fall apart in an instant.

At the section you talk about your mom being sick… I lost my father suddenly. You described the shrinking of the world quite aptly. I’m glad I had older coworkers and some friends who were there for me. I am still grieving so I think I’ll get back into video games and books/media this holiday. The monsters don’t go away though. As what one of my friend’s mom said “wherever you go, there you are”. Much like the protagonist trying to escape life.
