People also do not understand that this is an ACOUSTIC version of one of their own songs. They are not imitating or striving for something which so many people say. They aren't imitating funk or soul, they make the music that they want. They're also incredibly talented and noble musicians. Both siblings have incredible voices and extensive music theory understanding. This is only something you can know if you listened to multiple of their songs and not just a 30 second clip on tik tok. They also, even as nepo babies, have worked hard to not sign on to any record label and to run themselves completely independently (hence their latest album title 'family business'). Regardless if you like their music, I think they deserve acknowledgment for their craft.

I'm someone who has casually enjoyed Lawrence for years I was so disheartened when I realized the new attention they were getting was only negative, so thanks for this video! I really don't get those kinds of ads it seems and I wear headphones in public; but I do wonder if these ads got to me before any of their music had if I would be a member of the echo chamber mob 😅

I was invited by a friend to see them live. I had never heard of them before and put this track on. I hated it completely organically. I think the true conflict is: in the same way you can detect when a person's whole life has been a series of career moves, you can get a sense of when art is being made to be liked. The track seems to say they have a problem if you don't. They certainly have ability in abundance, but that can't outrun the intangibles. My friend had a blast. To each their own.

I think it's so ironic that THIS is the song that's catching all the flack too- a song about not knowing why dissenters don't like your music and trying to figure out exactly what they DO want. The lines "My meditation tells me it's in my head/But there you're goin' again with all the copy and pasting" are about anxiety surrounding hate being true and internet trolls copying takes they've already heard with no added nuance or commentary. Y'all, this is what is ACTUALLY happening. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Or, and follow me on this one, it’s because the age of social media has raised a generation that conflates the fact that, despite a lot of opinions being uninformed, worthless trash, being given an electronic soapbox magically imbues them with authority. This is spurred further by mob mentality and an algorithm geared towards negativity. This is much the same reason why people whose grasp of science apexed at Mentos-volcano level, like to go on social media and lecture the public about vaccine efficacy. I could go on in detail about the ridiculousness of nepo-baby (a term that implies the person(s) in question do not have the skills or talent and are only where they are because of familial relations) but let’s just say 2 things. 1- Anyone who thinks The Rolling Stones had Lawrence open their MetLife Stadium show because Marc Lawrence wrote episodes of “Family Ties…” is an idiot. 2- How can anyone deride individual talent based on their parents’ success? Are these same critics attacking Billy Eilish’s background? Berry and Esther Gordy literally started Motown Records by taking money from their TRUST FUND. Do they want to scream about their inauthenticity, too? It’s just too dumb. As for claims of being derivative or inauthentic, much of this is the braying of the uninformed who ignore the fact that music’s evolution is all about cross-pollination and taking inspiration from what’s come before. Who wants to argue about authentic gospel music which, itself, was partially influenced by Gaelic psalms and 2 white, English, 18th century composers? Weird how The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Moody Blues’ first output (including some early hits) were R&B covers (“Go Now” was a Bessie Banks song, “Money-That’s What I Want” was Motown’s first hit). Anyone looking for eyeballs and likes by encouraging the pitchforks-and-torches crowd to cancel them? Many of The Coasters’ hits were written by 2 Jews from New York. Are they now talentless poseurs? Queen’s harmonies don’t exist without Bach’s chorales. Shall we tell the band D/Troit that they aren’t allowed to make the music they like because they’re a bunch of white guys from Copenhagen? How many examples would people out there like? You don’t have to like Lawrence. My sister thinks Gracie’s timbre is unpleasant. That’s her prerogative. I also know someone into Metalcore who would engage in self-mutilation before he’d listen to a band with a horn section. That’s entirely his right also. But the people online passing criticism on the basis of a single video snippet (or even the one video in its entirety, a video which is just one of at least three different interpretations of the song made by the band) are passing judgment like the blind men grabbing parts of the elephant and deciding it’s like a rope, tree, wall, etc. Those “critics”are just as ill-informed and just as foolish. And I think we’d all be better off giving them less attention… although at the height of the Lawrence-bashing, this song spent a month going up the iheart radio chart, one notch at a time. SMH Finally: the entire song is about the pressures of conformity and making musical product that defies preconceived expectations and the notions of what others want them to be. And the prevailing criticism was “this isn’t what I like or think it should be.” A verse literally begins with the wry mention of “Buzzfeed top ten ways that you hate me” and these clowns proceed to demonstrate how they’re products of the Buzzfeed/clickbait generation. So in addition to being demonstrably ignorant of much of music history, they also lack self-awareness and a good grasp of irony.

i only recently deleted tiktok (wasted too much time on it lol) but when this song was making the rounds around october or so on my fyp, i personally only ever saw the criticism of it being a weirdly gentrified and bastardized rendition of really good soul, even despite the singer’s technically amazing voice. interesting to see another side of the hate train that i quite frankly never was shown on my feed, just goes to show how much these platforms’ algorithms shape people’s opinions and views (especially when said algorithms prioritize engagement, even if it’s all hyperpolarized takes about even the most mundane things)

I think for their new album, what got me was not liking the direction they took their production I really loved the compositions and production on songs like “Do You Wanna Do Nothing With Me”, “Probably Up”, and “Freckles”. Not only well performed, but kind of felt very tasteful in terms of instrumentation and harmonization. However, their new album feels like they kind of just made it “overly” full, which I think is what feels super commercial about it. I think they are very talented and I really liked some of the musical ideas they brought in to their music, so I hope the next album connects better.

Honestly, as a fan since their first album, I didn’t jive with the previous couple since the era you were talking about. But this album in question, the most recent, I felt was a genuine and big step toward in the direction they came from that we all loved. They utilized their band far more, they stepped back from the overly pop gospel aesthetic, and you hear more Clyde in the album again.

I feel the same way. They took more of a pop turn on some tracks like Guy I Used To Be and 23 which I don't love as much. Those songs sound fine- I think they work well for a workout playlist or something similar. However, they seem to lack the heart and funk of songs like Hip Replacement and Circle Back (or their older songs as you said.) It's great to see how they've developed though. As far as albums go, I think this is their most thematically cohesive and sonically diverse.

Is it just me or is the consumerist argument such a bad faith take in 2024? The world is so goddamn depressing these days and this song has been, at least for me in the last couple months, a fun and upbeat tune to Jam along to on a long drive or while making breakfast. Sure I can see that it would slot pretty seamlessly into an ad but if the entire point of what they're selling is to hit the dopamine button than why can't anybody also argue that soundtracking the mundane with sick vocals and keys-all around good energy-is also a valid way to listen?

I'm kinda sad, the analysis was great, but it felt so shallow... This could have been a 30 minute video, going into the writing, the meaning, what makes it so hated. The clip you play is the full band acoustic version of the opening tune of an album, it's not in context, we can't understand what role it plays in a full creation. It's extremely relevant, because it's exactly what the people you call out will hear of it, but if you want to pretend like they judge too quickly, I feel like there could have been at least an explanation of what makes corporate ad music annoying, and why this song is considered ad music by people who hear 10 seconds of it. I feel like it's more of a brief commentary of what songs like it are usually associated to and why people are too quick to critisize things, sometimes not even giving their own opinion. It almost feels rushed. To me this video is not "Why does Tiktok hate this song" but "Tiktok comments aren't thought out and corporations aren't creative". I can see it's well edited, the writing is great and the points are well made, but it almost feels like the intro to a long form video essay on this exact topic.
@MathiasMorte
@MathiasMorte 16 күн бұрын
@@trazer1228 thanks so much for your critiques, I appreciate it. In a landscape of 30 minute videos that could and should be 10 minutes, this is my attempt at not self indulging a topic too much. I also come from the land of 1 minute TikTok videos, so as I get better at this hopefully I can take more time with a topic. While I totally agree with you that there is greater context that matters deeply, the fact is that the reason TikTok hates it is maybe more superficial than you see. To say that the 100 “corporate music” comments are because of a deeper rooted issue gives them too much credit… they’re just bandwagoning. I do fundamentally agree with your ideas, I just didn’t necessarily set out to explore beyond the very hostile and misplaced criticisms I saw on my social media :)
@kyloren9588
@kyloren9588 15 күн бұрын
this is quite true, i would say that on the other end of the spectrum you have videos that just make the video longer with filler like explaining the timeline of everything, stuff that isn’t related to the question/topic of the vid. yeah but i believe this song is so hated because it’s so loud maybe cos of how they compressed and mixed the song, and that can make it polarising
