Love this process! One question: if the alum is a mordant and the rust is a mordant, why use both? Wondering if I could use something natural and not harmful instead of the alum.
@sandybabb8313
@sandybabb8313 Ай бұрын
That was a personal choice for me you do not necessarily need to use both. I always treat my papers with aluminum water to help them hold the dye. I used the rusty objects because I like the color it gives, you can get the same color using coffee or tea. I also like using smaller rusty objects between my pages sometimes to get cool markings or prints on the paper.

I've done coffee, tea, a combo of coffee and tea, avacodo, tempra paints watered down into a spray, and the shaving cream, and acrylics mix, but I haven't eco dyed yet. I love how yours turned out, but I'd perfer pastel colors. I may have to try this.

I would adwise you all to use thin gloves (one-time-use gloves) when handeling alum, both the paper and the bundels. Aluminium is not good for our body. And prosess outside! What you told about the leaves was very informative! Thank you.

I know it’s been years, but, I am interested in where or what the cardboard is! I have never seen brown cardboard? Thanks fron Niagara
@sandybabb8313
@sandybabb8313 Ай бұрын
That was the back of an old paper tablet that was quite thick, you can use any type of thicker cardboard (not corrugated it will come apart) or compressed tag board or you can even use a thinner pieces of wood. What you want is something a bit rigid that won’t become mushy or deteriorate during the boiling process to keep your stack of papers together and to help in the binding process of holding things tight so you will get a good transfer.

I just found you via this tutorial. I really enjoyed this and found it very inspiring. I'm now searching and gathering the pots etc and getting ready to try it out myself. My alum arrived yesterday. I heard you mention something about sun dying flower blossoms. I'd really love to see a demo of your method. I couldn't find it in your videos or maybe I missed it? Or maybe you might consider doing an demo video on that method (or more of some of your other methods). You just do a great job of explaining and keeping things simple while staying effective. Thanks you so much. I am looking forward to trying this great method out very soon

I have never used color construction paper however thank you for introducing that! I will definitely do it! Also the tea addition. One thing I do is rinse from the stack, that way you have a little more stability behind the one you are rinsing. I am on the west coast so have some different varieties than you, still interesting and beautiful! Thank you for the video.

What’s nice about it is, l can set the temperature to what ever temp l want and it’s nice and deep and has length to it as well. Thanks for sharing…l love the construction paper idea ❤️👍😃

Sandy Babb really? handling aluminum powder and spraying it? With respect, I've been a dyer, weaver, so have used many toxic mordants. (same with eating food cooked in aluminum pans) I'm cringing watching how reckless this is. And no mention of viewers protecting themselves?!Not just gloves but also N-95 mask for powder and spray. It's Poison ma'am.And yet you caution regarding the poison Sumac and the heat of turning your package and protecting from the rocks. . Interesting results after all. Hope you take care.

Yes I ironed the paper with a warm dry iron after they completely air dried. Can you tell me which portion of the video where I mentioned “processed these” so I can reference back to it? It has been a while ago that I made the video, I will review to see what I said.

The colored papers are called Construction Paper. Here in the US we can buy it from local department or craft stores and it is readily available on Amazon. Here is a link for a 50 sheet package, you can purchase in different brands and package sizes: Tru-Ray Construction Paper P103031, 10 Classic Colors, 9" x 12", 50 Sheets a.co/d/563e6Lr

What exactly IS construction paper?
@sandybabb8313
@sandybabb8313 Жыл бұрын
Construction paper, here in the US, is considered a children’s art paper and is used widely in younger grades of schools. It is a thick brightly dyed paper made from wood pulp, water, recycled paper, and synthetic or organic dye. It is usually not color fast and will over time fade and when really old become brittle. Crayola markets a premium brand but there are many brands and for this experiment I used a cheap off brand from a dollar store. To help with preserving it after dyeing and drying before use in page binding I would recommend coating pages with a sealant. If you google “construction paper” or look on Amazon you will find many options.

My Grandkids do this with me and love it… India Flint was the first and instigator of Eco printing. Love her book and have been using for year since it was first published. I do worry that the colour pigments in construction paper are not very echo friendly. Do you know how it is made?
@sandybabb8313
@sandybabb8313 Жыл бұрын
Construction paper is made from shredded wood pulp and water mixed to a thick paste consistency then recycled paper and dye are added and paper sheets are formed. From what I can gather some colorants are synthetic and some are organic. I guess it would be up to the individual to determine if they would choose to use it or not. Some artists are purist and want totally organic compounds and some are not. I guess one would need to research the labels to determine what type of dyes were used. I do not over worry much over paper items as no matter how organic or acid free a paper is over time it will deteriorate. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for viewing.

Have you tried leaves of “Eucalyptus polyanthemos” kind(I use translation robot on this word cus I’m not sure the right English of it)? I’m in Taiwan, and here when I see people doing eco printing they love to put those leaves. They will turn to orange color and REALLY gorgeous ❤.
