Kent Southern water - outgoing water A consortium of infrastructure funds, pension funds and private-equity investors own Southern Water through Greensands Holdings, managed or represented by JP Morgan Asset Management, UBS Asset Management, Hermes Investment Management and Whitehelm Capital. Hong Kong-based Cheung Kong Infrastructure and The Li Ka Shing Foundation are direct investors. Southern Water outgoing water (sewage) was privatised in 1989. It is ultimately owned by Greensands Holdings Limited, which is owned by a consortium of long-term investors representing infrastructure investment funds, pension funds and private equity firms. These include UBS Asset Management, JP Morgan Asset Management and Whitehelm Capital, and Hermes Infrastructure funds. Its 2019-20 turnover was £878m and operating profit before interest and tax was £213m. English water companies have handed more than £2bn a year on average to shareholders since they were privatised three decades ago, according to analysis for the Guardian. The payouts in dividends to shareholders of parent companies between 1991 and 2019 amount to £57bn - nearly half the sum they spent on maintaining and improving the country’s pipes and treatment plants in that period.

Hi Ian, we instruct all citizen scientists to store the samples in the dark and out of direct sunlight this is covered in the video also thank you for your comment.

Most of the common faecal indicator bacteria are killed off rapidly by daylight. It is very important that the samples should not be exposed to direct sunlight and preferable for the bottles to be uv absorbent. It is also that that they are analysed within very specific time windows, ans similar care should be shown in the laboratory.

Should do what you can in the shade and put the sample bottle in black bag. Coliforms, E Coli etc die off very quickly in daylight.

How do you dispose of the virkon (once it has changed colour or after every home washing?) if you are not on mains sewage. It would go through a home sewage system and then into a stream.
@timharris3422
@timharris3422 Жыл бұрын
Hi Scott once the colour has dropped out the Virkon is mostly spent and inert so should be ok to put through a home sewage system but cautiously so I would dilute the virkon as you are disposing of it so if able leave the tap running as you pour it down the sink if not then dilute the virkon in 5 litres of tap water then pour down the sink.

Absolutely, brilliantly put Brian, my local river is the gipping in suffolk, and its shocking, the lower level " working" people from the Ea that I have met are good caring folk, but as usual the middle to upper management, for want of a better word are atrocious, they could care less about our river, refuse too clean it up , weed clear etc and whats worse refuse to stock it, although they are happy getting back handers for allowing building on ancient flood plains, and back what little flow up, in remote areas, large fallen trees, various debris is clogging stretches , to the point its close to stagnation, the EA is a farce

It is something I remember seeing as a child living right on the River Great Ouse, until around 1965 you could see the bottom of the river at most times, other than when in flood. The river was managed by the Great Ouse River Authority, in winter the river would be backed up from Brownshill Stanch weirs and lock at Erith, the water meadows were allowed to flood up to the flood banks. Then the sluices would be opened and the backed up water went down the New and Old Bedford drains to the Wash, some would be diverted down the Old West river to Ely and the Rive Cam. Being a slow running river silting up was a potentially big problem and this action flushed the river from Huntingdon through St Ives onto Erith. I lived in Hemingford Grey with the river at the bottom of the garden. From 1965 this process was stopped because of building around Huntingdon on flood planes. Water quality declined in a few years of London Angling Club having fishing rights along long stretches of the banks, the amount of ground bait used would leave the riverbed white on a Monday and grey/brown rotting mess. This soon resulted in the clarity of the river declining to a overall brown rather than clear. The GORA regularly cut weed growth to keep flow and navigation. By the 1970's the river came under Anglian Water, and the previous river management was stopped, without explanation. Nowadays the quality of water is tested (or should be) in a much more precise manner, due to the improvement in scientific knowledge and testing equipment. The development of natural floodplains is counter productive for the management of slow running rivers throughout Britain. Additionally the intensification of farming has resulted in the ground water being contaminated by the over use of nutients.

Seems a shame that the EA can still employ 10,000 staff but still downgrades the priority of enforcement of their own agricultural rules
