How are you going to do the cooling on the cylinders ? The 500 is notorious for over heating on the rear cylinders ?
@LTVoyagerАй бұрын
There is no problem putting two wires into a pin as long as the sum of the cross sectional area meets the requirements for the pin. Obviously, you will need a pin a size or two larger than the gauge of wire being used, but as long as the sum of the cross sectional areas is within the range of areas specified for the pin, you are good to go.

Hi, thanks for posting this video. I actually have a BD4 that I've installed a Garmin GPS Nav system in. I have a GN-355 with dual G5's. I'm about to tear my hair out because I can't seem to get my system to calibrate properly. I've don't it more than eight times and every time....even after it says "calibration successful"...the Garmin HSI is anywhere between 3-20 degrees off from my whiskey compass. And before trying to calibrate the Garmin I had just swung the whiskey compass using my airports compass rose. After calibration how closely does your Garmin's compass readout match your whisky compass?

Do you have any details on how you made the controller for the recognition pattern?
@bd5pilot8832 ай бұрын
The Aveo LED lights have that programming internal. It's just a matter of wiring them correctly, some of the triggers for the lighting features are grounding wires.

BD-5 flat plate drag area can be calculated from top speed, and known horsepower and propeller efficiency. Better yet, and far easier, is from speed and given thrust: BD-5J maximum speed given as 319mph. This calculates to 260.16Lbs/ft^2 of dynamic pressure. Known as "q". [0.5*(Rho*V^2)] Where V is in ft/sec. And 1mph = (22/15)ft/sec. And Rho = 0.002377. Microturbo TRS18-46 has 1,000N max continuous thrust. But actually 1,100N Maximum for a few minutes. This is 247.29lbf. Thrust divided by drag gives 0.9505. Correct it down over 3% to account for compressibility at 0.42 mach. Is 0.923. This is flat plate drag of BD-5J. Easily under the magic 1 square foot. Where q can be greater than thrust. Take flat plate area, Divided by 37.8sqft wing area. Gives 0.0244 drag coefficient. This is beliveable, as Vans RV-3s which are aluminum single seat centerline seating airplanes have a similar CD0min around 0.022-0.024. This 2.4 square feet is probably at maximum lift over drag speed, where induced drag makes up half of the drag (doubles the drag). And there is extra interference drag also.

Sir, I commend your work and dedication. With respect to the cooling; may I recommend a review of NACA ARR E4E31. Unless you aim those engine exhaust tubes down the centre of the exhaust duct you have only half of the cooling system Jim Bede intended to have for the BD5.
@bd5pilot8837 ай бұрын
Thank you for the message. Yes, I have that document and have reviewed with some of Bede's engineers. My calculations are for a 1.6 sq in exhaust flange centered about 1 inch into the venturi opening.

Thank you for the check in. This year I've had to put a great deal of focus on my practice so i could once again afford the time and money to finish the project. Getting Covid in February did not help! I've got some ideas brewing in my head regarding engine cooling that should really be neat. It will probably be early next year before I can get to it at the hangar though.

Not being able to open the canopy from outside is definitely a safety issue that most of the builders don't consider. People on the ground coming to your rescue are not going to have an ax with them unless you are super fortunate. You are correct to be thinking about how to implement that feature.

I've heard different opinions on the force required to pull the gear up. Do you have an opinion of that?
@bd5pilot883 Жыл бұрын
It takes an initial firm pull or push but once the gear is started it just requires a gentle force to maintain the motion and get it over center for whichever position you are cycling to.

My father and I built a BD-5B in the early 70's. The plane was finished except for the engine installation. Much to my dismay, he sold it while I was on active duty to someone in the Tri-Cites, Wa. I am now flying an Aeriane Swift and plan to replace the Solo engine currently in it with a ZDZ 360B4-J.

I have never built a plane, my concern is the engine mounts. Will they not pass the engine vibration to the body and in the future perhaps create stress or cracks?
@bd5pilot8832 жыл бұрын
ZDZ recommends a solid mount with no rubber isolators. The engine is a boxer design so the vibration from the power impulses cancel each other out... it is Gold Wing smooth. I opted for using Delrin shoulder washers and washers to isolate aluminum to aluminum contact between the engine and firewall.

That is beautiful craftsmanship! I hope that engine works, but I can't see how it's going to give you the torque or reliability you're going to need. It's going to be screaming.
@bd5pilot8832 жыл бұрын
The engine has already proved very reliable in powered parachutes and drones in the Czech Republic and Europe. I've worked hard to keep my final weight down, I believe my last time weighing the aircraft was 345 lbs. The light weight combined with keeping the original aerodynamics slick by not adding any scoops hanging out should make it a very efficient design, not needing extra horsepower and torque just to push more weight and drag.
