This was my probably my twentieth time listening to this recording, but it was the first time in a while. The way that this choir sang this piece filled me up with so much joy and chills to the point where i shed some tears, and it’s a reminder on why im pursuing choral music ed. Great great work!

Great rendition...such respect. We need to embrace it when other cultures who once were our enemies are now attempting to honor and bless our culture. There is no restoration when there is no forgiveness. We hold up reconciliation with our unwillingness to forgive. God forgive us all. 😔

My school performs this song every year for graduation and believe me, this one is a major tear jerker to everyone. Next year will be my senior year and my last year singing this beautiful piece. I will definitely be in tears knowing that I'll have finally made it. I'm in tears now just thinking about it, I love this piece and how emotional it is.

Such a difficult song! I’m glad you enjoyed singing it; I’m 64 and still remember my huge fail in an audition. IMO, Handel was angry with an alto when he composed this. 😬

I sang this many times with my men's choir in highschool and just last weekend I had the joy of finally walking in the Scottish highlands near Edinburgh. (didn't make it quite to Loch Lomond but I will someday) And as the sun was shining, and the stream passed below me down the beautiful landscape, I listened to this video on my headphones as I walked, and I just wanted to let you know that your art was appreciated very much so. Cheers.

My son has been in the competition concert choir of his high school for all 4 years. The tradition is for concert choir alumni to come on stage and sing along. It's amazing to see the approx 20 or so that make it back each year for the spring concert slot themselves in and sing. It always sounds like they've all practiced together. Last night was my son's last concert. The tears were flowing.

Thank you to everyone in this comment area for the information. I want to teach this song to my choir, but I'm glad to know the origins of this melody, and glad to have information and other links to show my students to explain that this isn't the true Honour song. Any other information that viewers in the Mi'kmaq nation feel I should tell my students would be very helpful. I can't wait to show them the Eastern Eagle Singers, Sarah Denny and George Paul. It can bring up a great conversation of appropriation of cultures, and about picking music authentically. I was always taught that honor songs were not allowed to be recorded. Is this the case? Where can I look for more information about the Mi'kmaq nation?
@whitewolf_nl7 жыл бұрын
Most Mi'kmaw seem to agree on the Honor Song brought to the people by George Paul; with that said, as far as I understand any song could be used as an honor song based on interpretation and intentions. eg: a water song during a celebration involving water. I'ko seems to be an ancient chant with countless variations that I simply haven't figured out yet. With the nature of regional variation, and very likely similar chants to begin with, trying to 'nail down' a 'correct' chant is like herding cats! As for recording, I feel like the rule of thumb is 'not in ceremony'. When in doubt, ask!

My high school is singing this in every concert we do. The seniors stand on the stage of our auditorium, and the freshman, sophomores, and juniors stand around the edges of the auditorium. I heard them do it when I was in eighth grade, and it brought me to tears. I'm so excited to be a part of these beautiful arrangement this year and these next three to come.
