She did an amazing job with this song. For those criticizing her "upbeat" version, it doesn't diminish the song. Listen to the lyrics. It's about the facade and masquerade. Whats being shown vs whats felt. This version strengthens that facade. The original song is about the inside emotion. Natasha's version speaks to the masquerade. Thats my take. LOVE what she did here. The riff at the end (which she slayed) I interpret as her letting the inside emotion out.

A version that seems to be forgotten by many is Johnny Rivers cover. Unlike this he can do it naturally like Smokey and doesn't have to try to make something else out of it.

That "I´m undefined" outta tempo it s been so natural. Natasha, you got me straight back in 2009 with your lyrics. So I was when back this past sunday I went to the movie and listened to it again. I am unwritten Can't read my mind I'm undefined I'm just beginning The pen's in my hand Ending unplanned Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten Oh, oh, oh I break tradition Sometimes my tries are outside the lines We've been conditioned to not make mistakes But I can't live that way Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten The rest is still unwritten The rest is still unwritten

Wow, she really butchered the hell out of this song. No one doubts your vocal range. You don't need to turn a good song into a demonstration of all the notes you can hit.

I agree, bizarre how so many think this was brilliant. At best it was mediocre, she veered off missing notes repeatedly and screamed for the most part, sounding out of steam and exhausted before the end. The song warrants tenderness not a scream. Painful. Smokey looked pensive and unimpressed.
