There's a French movie from the 1970s (starring Jean-Louis Tritignant) about a computer specialist for an insurance company. He wants to kill his wife and make it look like an accident, so he calculates the odds for certain deaths to appear accidental using a calculator with a magnetic card tape. I recall it features a lot of close-ups of him handling that thing, but I cannot recall if he uses the SR-52 or the HP-65. I only saw this movie once and always wanted to have that calculator.

The real way to check if it's a scientific calculator is to do for example 3 + 4 x 5. If the result is 23, it's a scientific calculator. If the result is 35, it's a non-scientific calculator with a few advanced functions added.

Well, those calculators were mostly gadgets...Imagine doing your taxes on this watch . good luck

@@ftey2000Sure. But you have to remember that back i 1983 people didn't go around with a smartphone in their pocket, so having a calculator on your watch could come in handy in certain situations. And if the calculator was a scientific one, it certainly wouldn't hurt.

@@HGSolberg Yes, I know, I was in engineering school at that time, and had my trusty HP25. And for everyday calculation, pen and paper were still faster than typing on your watch, especially with my big fat fingers

It looks very much like a Friden EC-130 (and has similar capabilities), but the Friden wasn't using ICs and its case was far more crammed with parts. It also used magnetostrictive delay lines for memory, whereas the registers here are based on solid-state flip-flops.

Salut biker !

Other desktop machines that existed at the time were entirely programmable, and were effectively personal computers (like the HP 9100 he mentioned). This was aimed at a different market segment, I think.

I remember the Victor salesman bringing one of these to my Dad's company in 1969. We got to demo it for a week, very neat and futuristic, but as I recall, the price was around $1500, which my Dad said NO to! Was fun to play with, I wonder how many Victor sold.
