This is SO FANTASTIC on so many levels. I’m in Phoenix - recently transplanted and know Madeline. Also GIT ‘88. If you ever visit - I am buying you lunch. No arguments! Have a great day, Jay and THANK YOU for all these wonderful videos.

Man. I've been a H.R. guy since I heard A Tribe Called Quest. I had to do a lot of digging back then to get to the liner notes, lol! Long live the memory of a dirty guitar player. ❤️

That is one sick old Telecaster. I wish I had an old Tele or Strat from the 50's or early 60's $$$. They certainly don't make em like that anymore! It must sound AWESOME plugged into an old blackface. Your Dad was an incredible guitar player and musician. Those old jazz cats ruled.

Great vid and what a great guitar player this guy was. I heard his name on the wrecking crew movie from the story Bill Pitman tells about Howard and Phil Specter having a fight lol. I don't know how Phil Specter could criticize this really talented guy. Howard was so brilliant Phil Specter probably couldn't fathom it.

Is there any chance you have a live version of Howard doing ‘Dolphin Dance’ ? With video would be even neater. His studio recording is one of my all time favorites of anything.

I have a CD listed on Bandcamp. If you listen to some of the solos you can clearly hear your dad's influence. I used to listen to him by the hour. The CD is called 'Show of Hands.'

Sometime late 70s he was at Port Townsend, part of the Centrum Jazz Clinics. He sat in with our group and was so excited about playing and loads of ideas on what to do with the tune. He started out just listening- but it seems he just couldn’t help it and had to play also. Great memory. I did a bunch of ‘jam’ session with Jill back in the old days too.

I was so lucky to attend the school at Gower Studios in Hollywood in 1976 or 1977. I had so much fun. Howard Roberts taught all classes at the time. I was a young teen and was cutting high school (Pat Hicks made a joke about it). When I walked into class everyone knew I should have been in HS, they all made me feel welcomed. Howard was a great teacher. That will always be one of my top memories. He told the class he had a picnic at the end of a runway with Barbara S. lol

I was about 14yo in the late ‘70s when my guitar teacher, Johnny Frisco (great name, right?), introduced me to Django, HR, and (interestingly) Larry Carlton. HR’s playing just BROKE MY HEAD, it was SO musical and SO CONFIDENT. Really grateful for this RMI channel, and the JOY you two exhibit, “workin out”, together. Thanks, Guys!

love all the HR vids dudes. u guys are great players too! killin. hey u should check out barry harris’ -6dim scale: its the harmonic and melodic minor scales in one! perfect for “pure” minor harmony like autumn leaves. 👊 by the way it really sucks that all of those Howard Roberts records like “instrumental hits” and the rest from that time including the later but great great Concord one are not available on Apple Music. There’s only the weird ones that nobody wants to listen to no offense like antelope Freeway and the two early verve records, which are great…but all those other ones with the real great, one or two chorus solos where he plays pretty much every standard in the real book and like I said, the Concord record which is to me his masterpiece: can’t stream them!! wtf?!
