One of the best pieces played by one of the best musicians, although the camerawork was kinda clunky.

One of the worst performances of this piece I have ever heard, Has so little to do with Strauss. And take stock of the facial expressions from the orchestra. I used to despise this piece. It is indeed the most difficult of the Strauss tone poems, but also perhaps also the best one. And all the arms effing arms flailing around from the podium. Even from Haitink .... let's not even begin to mention Clemens Krauss. There were a few times or so Eschenbach got lucky in Philadelphia - a fine Prokofiev 5 I heard once, paired with a good Brahms Violin Concerrto too, but it was never going to happen on Richard Strauss.

This so challenging. Yo-Yo Ma is of course untouchable on this and so many other pieces from the cannon. But the challenge as a musician and as a listener is to follow Strauss - there is a sort of frustration that goes on. It's like listening to someone who doesn't finish a thought and is constantly interrupting one idea to move to the next. But when you do finally get a coherent melody out of Richard Strauss they are indeed glorious. Thus, my complex relationship with R. Strauss.
