Your green house seems to be just a frame with some plastic sheeting wrapped around it. That stuff will never hold any kind of heat in. We have a greenhouse with plastic panels but have also some problems keeping it warm in the winter, although it doesn't get as cold as where you are. I bought an insulated greenhouse blanket for this winter but still need some sort of heat to keep the temperature up. I'm thinking heat lamps, but worry about the cost in electricity. I tried a product that was advertised as a "greenhouse heater" and what a POS it was. The little under desk heater in my office puts out more heat than this thing did. So we'll try a few heat lamps and see what happens.

You said that once a turtle is a pet it can’t be released in the wild, but the incubated and hatched turtles hatched a year ago? So they’ve been being hand reared for a year? Why can they be released then? Why were they not released right after they were hatched? Just wondering since I found a bunch of baby snapping turtles in my yard recently and relocated them to the nearest water so they wouldn’t get hit by cars
@JolleanSmithАй бұрын
@@withpeacelove366 good question. I think that advice (which comes from the turtle rescue) has to do with many factors. It can also vary by species. But as babies they don’t have a known area yet. Turtles can build a life map. This is the place they eat sleep mate etc. and they follow those paths their entire life. When those paths are changed they will then spend their life trying to get back. This is most common in box turtles and less common in aquatic turtles. But for these snapping turtles they didn’t have any known region yet. When people take animals from the wild they become accustomed to people and feeding etc. I have an injured box turtle that we adopted who is does not like even the smallest changes in his habitat. If I recall these turtles were not released right away for two reasons. 1. To allow them to get big enough to be able to handle the release increasing the odds of survival. 2. One of them had to be treated for an illness. Your moving of your turtles will be fine as they likely don’t have a map and more so as they are aquatic. You are very thoughtful to care about their well being. Box turtles are the ones I would worry about the most. They are the most sensitive to a change in their location.
@withpeacelove366Ай бұрын
@@JolleanSmith I didn't really change their location a lot. i moved them like 100-200 feet to cross the parking lot of my apartment building to put them by the lake and the river that comes off of it. the mom come out of that lake and river and lays the eggs in the woodchips in front of our apartment. Usually, i don't see any baby turtles at all but this year i spotted 2 in the gras, one seemed weak and then i spent a couple of hours looking for the others. I found one under a car, one kinda stuck in a spiderweb at the base of a tree and one almost near a sewer grate where it could have fallen down facing the total wrong way from the water that the mom comes from. they have to cross the parking lot and the private road in front of the building to get to the pond. I found 3 smushed in the road and 1 just dead in the parking lot from like drying out or something, there were ants on it and its eyes were cloudy. I tossed it over the fence into the pond area. The other ones that were alive that i picked up (5 of them) all with the exception of one who was very vigorous, played dead for a bit and they had sudden bursts of energy. Which made me worry the one that i threw into the pond wasn't dead. Im pretty sure it was but im worried about it. Of the ones that were alive, the super vigorous one i hopped the pond fence and put him in the water (which i read later was a bad idea) he seemed to be swimming around perfectly fine but i still can't help but be worried. The other one i found at the time wouldn't swim and this pond's water level had dropped alot recently, so the sides have steep incline of rocks (there is an upstream river i couldn't access and one other muddy banks spot i couldn't get to so hopefully the turtle i put in the water made it there fine. I didn't have a good place to put the weaker one so i walked down the street a little and found a spot by the river that had a good slope that wasn't two steep and ended up putting 3 there. then one i put on a water run off spot that leads into the pond, but there was a lot of leaves built up there so im nervous that the turtle might have had a hard time getting down to the water. I had to moved them so they wouldn't get squished in the road but i cant help but worry if i released them in a safe way.

@@withpeacelove366 it is lovely you even care. If you have a Facebook I would recommend following Central Mississippi Turtle Rescue. You can learn a lot about helping turtles and or find a turtle rescue group in your area. Turtles when injured can suffer a long time. They often need to get to a rehab. You may know this but be sure the turtle is an aquatic turtle. Not all turtles can swim. By placing them by the shore they will decide to go in or not go in. Sometimes when I release a turtle that I know is aquatic, it still takes an hour before they go in the water. Keep saving turtles you are a good human!

It is September 1st in western NY. Can I simply throw tarp over the grass and weeds until Spring?
@JolleanSmithАй бұрын
You can but there are a few considerations. 1. I am not sure leaving your ground covered that long is good for the microbes and organic matter in your soil which are good to have. Black Plastic is shown not to kill the good stuff and just kills Pathogens so it might be fine but I have not seen any studies on what happens to the soil when covered that long. But technically you could do it and in a cooler region you may need longer anyway. Any seeds in there that get moisture in the spring will still germinate but overtime you will reduce the volume. 2. I have not found tarps as good as plastic. The weave in tarps lets the sun through and they are not as hot. Plastic kills with heat, no moisture and no light. Hope that helps!

@JolleanSmithАй бұрын
They need more time. You likely have baby melons which means you have had some flowers. But give them a good drink and they will grow. They grow a lot like a cucumber only I water a tad more. It won’t be long and you should have an abundance. Also, if you feel you are not getting enough flowers make sure you are feeding them a lower nitrogen fertilizer to promote flower growth not greenery. Good luck and remember they have zero cold tolerance. One of the first things to die in cool temps.

@@JolleanSmith uh oh. How cold is cold? It's been pretty cold in the mountains where I live at night now but gets up to 80's during the day. Should I bring it inside at night? I could just bring it in for the remainder of the growing season and use the light instead, but don't they need bees to get flowers to grow? I'm sure you can tell I'm not an experienced gardener, so sorry if that's a dumb question. 🤔 🙄 I'm more experienced with succulents than anything else. Also, even though the pot it's in has several holes in the bottom, it seems as though the soil stays fairly damp. I'm afraid of root rot, so I don't water them until it seems dry enough. Finally, I've been using worm castings this year for fertilizing. I'm not sure what they contain as far as levels of nitrogen, potassium etc.

@@scootermom1791 I love your questions! That is how we all learn. Gardening is just one never ending learning experience. I am always learning something new and just when I am thinking I know it someone educates me on something new. Your questions are awesome. I can’t say for sure as I haven’t truly tested the lowest temps. Mine are usually done long before a freeze. Cucumbers typically won’t produce below 65f. So that is probably a good place to start. The plant won’t die but won’t do much so might as well bring it in. If your soil is moist no need to water. Moisture may not be your issue. Hard to know if your compost is an issue as a soil sample is the only thing that will truly tell us. My guess is you have good soil. How long has the plant been going? (Approximately from first sprout?)
@scootermom1791Ай бұрын
@@JolleanSmith I started the sprouts indoors around the middle of April. There weren't many of those sprouts that made it, though. I'm not sure if I placed the mouse melon seeds in that group or the second ones that I started as a result of the problems with the first ones. Anyway, I'm going to say this one has been going probably since around the middle of May. I kept all the successful ones indoors until it was warm enough to put them outside. We had a cold front at the beginning of June, so I didn't put them out until the middle of the month! I was still using my heat indoors the first week of June because it was THAT cold (just above 40°F at night)! Anyway, my mouse melon isn't growing large enough to need any kind of trellis, so I am going to bring it indoors at night from now on and put it back outside during the day. After reading your reply, I think it's growth was stunted from the colder temps, which we've been getting at night the last couple of weeks. The information you provided helped a lot. I was thinking there wasn't anything I could do to save it, but maybe bringing it indoors will encourage it to start growing more and producing fruit. If not, I can always try again next year. 🙂
