Beautiful! I saw you both play in Vancouver at the jazz fest back in the 90's, it had a massive impact on me. Listening here brings back that feeling. Thank-you!

Captivating. He should get together with Stetson, that'd be a pair to see since their styles are very similar.

The fact that you can circular breath while playing overtones on the melody and baseline all at the same time makes this one of the best videos I've ever seen. It might not sound too pretty, but you have to get past that!

I spent years trying to build and play a decent shakuhachi because I could not afford one, much less enough food to transcend malnutrition whilst all my teeth rotted out. I am a terrible shakuhachi player. I battle monsters everyday and night in the Hollywood ghetto, sometimes I take a walk around Yamashiro restaurant in the hills playing terrible shakuhachi. Count your blessings. You're pretty good.

This was great; thanks for posting it. I was able to get a copy of your Leo CD "Amulet" with Sainkho Namtchylak recently after reading about it in your article in one of Zorn's Arcana books. Amulet is an amazing recording that I really enjoy and treasure. Leo should re-release "Amulet", because it is now out-of-print,; although, I look forward to the day when my Leo CD has sold out.

I like the shakuhachi, it has such a mysterious sound unlike any other instrument I've heard.

@chungazrevenge well yes im more drawn to a melody structure that gives me some kind of emotional response ie miles davis but no one would accuse him of not having been experimental in his field! this reminds me a bit of captain beefhearts troutmask replica, which i love.

Ned Rothenberg is equally at home no matter what instrument he decides to express himself through. This is such a beautiful and mystical piece. If you like this, I recommend checking out his CD called Ghost Stories. Very cool.

im open to experimental music but this leaves me cold.technically brilliant im sure but it seems a dead end to me.

Also if you circular breath while playing a wind instrument your tone begins to sound like shit. Although the tone he was trying to achieve in this video was intended to sound like an oboe or something of that variety so nothing lost.
