Nice telemetry overlay! Could you please share some insights on how you're getting these done please 🙂 Would guess that the montage includes dashcam footage, recording of the main navigation display (via either AA or CarPlay), footage of your instrument cluster (using something like a GoPro) and a screen recording of CarScanner Pro (for the OBD data) from a 2nd phone?

Hi. The capture of ODB-II data is a recording from my phone, using CarScanner Pro. The main navigation display is a GoPro with macro lens. The dashboard is a GoPro with macro lens, covered entirely to eliminate glare and viewed with an external monitor. The scenery is a GoPro with polarized filter or my dashcam, depending upon lighting conditions. All that is stabilized & assembled in post.

This was the "quick" version. I envision a more detailed video later, perhaps with voice narration and handheld visuals. Right now (early morning in Minnesota), it is -9°F outside. So, there is little desire to deal with anything involving having an open door while filming. Thanks for the suggestion.

We live in CO and it is a mix. In the Denver proper plenty of charging stations but not many places to do it at home (older homes w no garage or many condos). Away from the city you have to drive far between towns, not much charging infrastructure. As my neighbor with the Prius put it, the range drops in the winter cold, it doesn't do well in snow, the range drops going into the mountains uphill, and the range drops when its hot, but otherwise it works well. I asked when "works well" is, he laughed and said he spent a few thousand for a home charge kit and commutes to work with it and runs errands except in the snow. (They also don't plow roads here so any non 4WD struggles to some extent and many small cars get stuck after heavy snow in our neighborhood). You have niche users like him, then the virtue signalers up in Boulder who will tell everyone to get one as if they are affordable, just like housing there lol (30-40% higher there and mostly older). EV Still only a few % of cars on the road but not zero...guaranteed to see a couple each day. Some BMW drivers have obviously converted to tesla given some of the antics I see. The price premium even with incentive, lack of range and practicality, expensive battery...still a couple decades away I think. Not for me personally in 2025. They can do better. I am 3 years away from a new car when my kid turns 16, it will 100% be ICE.

@kpk33x It has been a DC fast-charging desert here in Minnesota until recently. We're starting to see business funded locations now, along highway corridors and random cities. NEVI funded locations are on the way and NACS access is growing. So, it will only be a few years for them to become common. I suspect PHEV sales to ramp up too, since they are a fast better choice than ICE without any BEV apprehension.

Hi John! Happy New Year! Kind of a random and hopefully not too much of a request, but I have been following your adventures on your website since I was about 12 years old in 2007, I’ve read almost all of your personal logs, I think we chatted before way back on PriusChat, I have printed hundreds of your info sheets and user guides over the years to hand out before I even got my first car (2001 Electric Green Mica) in 2010, and have owned the first 4 generations of Prius since. I still currently own my 2016 Gen.4 and bought a Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell in 2022 after I moved from West Virginia to Southern California. Anyway, without making this comment too much longer, I would really love and appreciate if you were able to dig up some of the old Prius commercials, promo videos, and any other video clips you may have and want to share. Especially for the Gen.1 NHW10/nhw11 models and some early Gen.2 stuff. Four years since I got into Prius back in 2007 I have probably several hundred gigabytes of videos I’ve collected over the years, but I know I’m still missing some that have been lost to time.

@liameisenberg9711 The heating system shuts off at that point, since the warming threshold was reached. You see the same thing when reading ODB-II data after parking and power button is pressed. -40 is simply the lowest value, default when no data is available.

I get my bz4x in mid-December 24, so soon. no electric vehicle, but already half a dozen charging contracts. I hope for you in the USA that it is easier with you. here you can have many different prices at a charging station. depending on the card. luckily there is an app that is the cheapest card for you I'm curious how it will be for me after 50 years of pumping. starting with a moped (14 years old). The test drive with the Toyota was very impressive. on the first meters I felt very well cared for in the car. better than in my Lexus UX 250h. all good from Germany (Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia) 😅

Absence of efficiency observations from reviews is becoming a source of suspicion. MPG was always highlighted with traditional vehicles & hybrids. People want to know cost of travel. How much gas? Why not how much electricity? Such an omission is unacceptable. kWh/100km helps convey that information. In the United States, efficiency rating is stated in terms of kWh/100mi. Seeing mi/kWh on the vehicle displays helps us relate to that. In this video for US owners, 4.2 mi/kWh = 23.8 kWh/100mi. At a cost of $0.08 per kilowatt-hour, that's $1.90 to travel 100 miles. Why reviews exclude such vital information is purplexing. Perhaps they are showing bias for other automakers... unfairly judging bZ4X.

Hi John, is $0.08 per kWh typical in the States ? We're paying more like $0.32 (25p) here in Northern Ireland. Of course there a those who benefit (closer to your 10 cents) from night time rates and one or two mates have invested in solar panels and batteries.

@@john1701a Hmm, interesting question. I installed a Level 2 charger at home, so I quietly charge my Subaru Solterra (sister twin to BZ4X) every 5-7 days at home, overnight. Our utility company gives a 50% discount for off-peak electricity with proof of EV & level 2 charger purchase, so Its like $4 to charge from 20-90% in my garage. There are also many free public Level 2 chargers in the Salt Lake City area, 1 of them is 2 blocks from work, so more than half the time I charge there, for free. park in the morning, and walk back over 8 hours later fully charged. Haven't had the need to pay the higher rates for DC Fast charge yet, and its not supposed to be good for your battery, so I will avoid that unless absolutely necessary. And now the thought of fiddling around with an app for 8 minutes, steers me more clear of DC fast charging services, but don't get me wrong, its good we have them around, for long distance drivers.
