This is simply delightful, can't stop watching it!

with dauntless (as i discovered completely incidentally) he would probably also make a bit more sense if we still regularly saw the same nautically-themed comedies that gilbert and sullivan would have been familiar with but that their stuff has outlived now. even the way that dauntless talks is a mostly-orphaned reference to a particular character in a play from around the time that g&s were writing who also had his habit of talking in incredibly forced nautical references so it wouldn't surprise me if the stuff that he was DOING was also informed by that sort of theatre.

I have had the privilege of seeing both these productions, and would not hesitate to see them again, although other commitments prevent this happening (and I'm REALLY disappointed). The cast, as well as being highly talented, put loads of energy in their performances and it shows. Highly entertaining, and with some subtle twists that make you think "did I really see them do that?". If you can get to the venues where they are performing, I can't imagine you not being captivated by what you will see.

when talking about lovesick maidens... was the word you were looking for "appoggiatura"?
@randomaccount6387Ай бұрын
One note on "Would you know the kind if maid"- it's stated as an "old song"in universe, (one that Hilarion used to sing, at that, before Ida happened and he got dome character development).So I don't think it's Cyril's actual opinion on women- his attraction to Psyche and his verse in "I am a maiden" certainly seems to contradict that-as much as a random bawdy folk song he sings because it's fun without thinking too deeply about the lyrics.(And off course being tipsy he fails to see the inappropriateness- though it easily could've been passed of as ironic to the girls)

My nine year old half Greek child taught me Greek Mythology and those sessions of ours, as one could imagine the boy's attention to accurate details, with mind maps, were and so too lifted me to actually live a kind of G&S' Thespis! I can assure you every moment of every nuisance is, necessary... let's go pot luck outdoors lol... hey, crazy question, but are you the host of Live Abuse Free?? have a great day and thanks for the wonderful content :]

Thanks so much for these utterly incredible videos, which I am slowly working my way through. From someone literally on the other side of the planet, it's been delightful to see G&S analysed in such forensic detail, and to have the bonus of the singing elevated this one. Glad to see 'Tis Done, and The Hours Creep Up Apace, get their due! PS: I'm not sure how I feel that KZbin's automatic transcription reads "aria" as "Arya" [as in Game of Thrones]. I suppose that shows just how much more opera-related videos are needed...

Love this and I love the original Ruddigore compared to the latter. I think if I were to conduct it I’d use the original at the beginning of act 1 and Toyes beginning of Act 2 since there’s more music from Act 2 in Toyes version

I saw this production this evening. It is sensational. I've been to and been in countless G&S shows over more than 50 years and I can't think I've enjoyed anything more. The GD has great music, and this super-talented cast do it full justice, they sing, act and dance so well. The production has so many clever touches, and it is very, very funny.

I did not necessarily agree with all your ratings and your choices for best numbers (I really do not care for The Sorcerer) but I found your explanations of why you chose the numbers that you did, well considered and very interesting. And I love your passion for G&S. We are staging The Yeomen of the Guard this coming Oct 19th and 20th. It is certainly one of my favorites. I think "Like a ghost his vigil keeping" is great fun and agree with you about how funny it is that Point feels compelled to embellish on Shadbolt's account. And I absolutely agree with you that "The prisoner comes to meet his doom" is beautiful and moving. The chording and harmonies in it and the crescendos/decrescendos hits you in such a visceral and powerful way, especially as a counterpoint to humor of Shadbolt, Fairfax, and Phoebe in "To thy fraternal care. I think it is a brilliant piece of music. My favorite show is Princess Ida. I had the good fortune to play Gama in our 2017 production. A lot of people had told me that they thought that the dialogs were too long and boring and that the blank verse format made the dialogs a bit stilted. But I thought that it actually punctuated the humor, much like the clever banter in a Shakespeare comedy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWnNaGltibaWnLssi=eo7E7ldu25u-lZbg&t=2430. I had so much fun in this role. I love the way Gama insults Hildebrand and his court. The music in this show is just so good, especially the string of pearls in Act II. The Act II finale is spectacular. Here is a clip of that from out production. Julie Rumbold was so good as Ida in this number. Her powerful voice ust soars above the full chorus kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2ndXpSlrMR3e7csi=7ZDkZJtz_LtAbMvi. She embodied Ida's pride and defiance. I really enjoy your video. Keep up the good work. Here is a deep philosophical question: A vegan sausage roll contains no sausage. Is it still a sausage roll?
@forbeartheatre5 ай бұрын
No, it is a vegan sausage roll! There is actually a huge anti-woke movement to ban vegans from calling their products sausages and burgers (some people have absolutely no lives) because they want to keep the names sacred. I guess technically sausages have to have meat in them, but it's perfectly understandable for people to create vegan versions of things and call them similar names so that we can enjoy similar things alongside meat eaters. I would personally be super bummed if I couldn't order as vegan burger in a pub and was always forced to get some kind of vegetable curry. I think cooking with vegetables is great and I do do it, but I also enjoy junk food! Obviously it's not nice to trick people, but it's always very clear on the packaging when something is vegan. The word 'vegan' in this case fulfils the same function as the word 'articifial.' An artificial sausage roll is not a sausage roll, it is an artificial sausage roll! There is never the intent among vegans to make people thing that their products have real meat in them; they are providing an alernative.

I see that the Drayton Arms theatre is just around the corner from where Gilbert lived, at 24 The Boltons. Cast photo in costume outside? It's a lovely looking house, though from Google Maps I can't see a blue plaque. And by 1896 when he wrote Grand Duke Gilbert was living at Grim's Dyke. Looking forward to the show - GD is a collector's piece.

@amyc.russell94875 ай бұрын
... i usually say ruddigore, and that may do here. But thinking overall beyond the story, i think it should be relatively short, tuneful, funny, have at least a couple of characters to really like, and a villian to root against. Ideally with some great period fashion and a familiar-but-different setting. After giving a t.w. for suicide attempts, how about The Zoo. I realize that is Sullivan and B.C. Stephenson, but sometimes the best approach is diagonally. :)
@philipmyatt92275 ай бұрын
I love the choreography, it so suits the music.
@amyc.russell94875 ай бұрын
Before watching, i shall say for me it is Ruddigore. I do think that the major roles have great melodramatic meat on their bones. Most characters have oddities, grief, and damage. All have more on their minds than simple romance... even Zorah has the motivation of saving her professional bridesmaid job. (Granted i have an affection towards it as an opera that happened to be in my parents' record collection - i acknowledge a nostalgic bias! But, i would like to play any of the leads.)
@amyc.russell94875 ай бұрын
Oo, and besides the leads, the tenors and baritones chorus as ghosts gets a chance to do some physical acting, and play individualized characters as the ancestral ghost baronets. (The high voice chorus, not so much, unfortunately. They are a 'homogenous chorus' of bridesmaids and villagers, as Anna Russell terms the typical g&s chorus. I do not know if there is a similar chance in the oeuvre for the sopranos and contraltos to wear such varied costumes and deliberately vary their movement styles to suit the era they are from, as the ghosts get to do.)
