Good video. These style brush hooks are inferior design. With the curve in front of the handle you can get more inertia and leverage on your swings.

The Pipe style clamp looks great for this application. I use my drill press vise and an angle grinder to first make a hollow ground bevel on each side, then follow that with a smaller bastard file to finish both edges (careful not to leave a bur on the edge). The hollow ground bevel makes it easier to then touch up the sharp edge in the field several times before it needs to be hollow ground again. I can then see that it is sharp by feeling for any bur, and looking face on at the edge , which should "disappear".

New to this, I looked and the files come in different sizes and textures between smooth and course. What : • File size is recommended? • Which file brand is better? • Smooth or course?

There are specific angles to file axes ,knives , scissors , garden tools , even the experts can come close ,working you can touch up the edge , When you get bak to your shop ,sharpen it correctly , pros use a belt sander to get the edge perfect , Racing axes used in Timber Sports are sharpened to a totally different edge and angle

That's right. What angle do you think this axe needs?

That is how you do it. If you find something flat you can sit on the handle. I like swinging a bush ax better than a golf club, especially in young pine or poplar. Leave the end dull to dig irons with. If you keep your bush ax sharp you will not have to replace as any handles. Take care of your file. Brush it off with a wire brush and keep it in an oily rag. Both styles of bush axes are good. I like the four bolt with the plates because you can replace a handle in the field with that style easier. They make a three bolt, but I think the handles split more with three bolts. Look handles over good before you buy them.

at eight minutes six seconds sharpening begins. You will need to stick around for curved sharpening.

i bet this guy goes through a whole lot of files using them sideways like that. i mean come on i went to shop class in high school and we were never taught to use a file like that, all it does is flatten the teeth.

It's a pipe VISE with hardened steel jaws. You should put wood, rubber, leather, or cloth padding between the jaws and the wood to prevent leaving marks and damaging the handle. Google "pipe vise". There are chain versions too.

Fricking awesome detailed video. I need to use an antique brush axe next week to clear beside a driveway and the axe hasn't been sharpened in 40 years lol. I know how to sharpen it now! Thanks.
