The fact that a person whose life was spent with difficulties and suffering composed this song is an indication of an extraordinary personality..

It was one of the best times for the United States: the economy was thriving, multi-liter car engines could devour as much fuel as they wanted, all sorts of outcasts could be disposed of in Vietnam.

This scene is so beautiful and so utterly ugly. But most of all, heartbreaking.

For a kid growing up in the 1960's it was wonderful, but if you were 18 your chances were pretty good you would be drafted. I was one of those kids who grew up in the 1960's and early 70's who was fortunate to of had such a wonderful wonderful childhood, Thanks Mom and Dad. Miss you both.

I get choked up every time I watch this scene. It resonates with me as I did two tours to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. It captures the heartache of war on both sides and how war is evil and unjust. I have a lot of regret from my actions and service over there and how we treated civilians.

This might be old, but it shows the meaningles of war, think of what of what’s going on in Ukraine now in a 2023 war, horrible, support them anyway you can, even just by saying you support them NOT comminist russians!

Ironically this song was not very well known in America until it was featured in this film. Larry Newton, the head of ABC Records, disliked the way this song sounded because it was too slow and not rock-n-roll enough, and kept trying to meddle in the recording sessions until he was kicked out. In retaliation, he delisted the song from any promotional advertising in the US. However the song became very popular in the UK and Europe, while it was relatively unheard of in the US for almost 20 years until it was featured in Good Morning Vietnam, after which it became a mainstream hit.
