Looks like at some point in the history of WG the gears came with a brown paper covering. Or is this an MDF prototype?
@WildGearsCreations29 күн бұрын
Long ago, before I started doing my own manufacturing, all the gear sets were made with a protective brown paper layer. It could be peeled off, or left in place. Now all the gear sets are delivered without any extra layers on the acrylic that need to be removed, just some stripes of tape (no sticky resdue) holding everything in place for shipping.

I'll do the same, but this is sentimental and cheap so i know I'll do that, but it's fine... like if anyone is held prisoner in my room/house/garage, they will not be bored a second for at least 4-6 months, lol😅😞

Seriously it was the one thing from the full page gear set I would have liked more of, a larger variaty of movable hoops.
@WildGearsCreations3 ай бұрын
That is why I make the Hoops and Enormous Hoops gear sets. As much as I would like to fit more of everything into the Full Page gear set I've done the best I know how to put a taste of as many options and features as possible into that one gear set. Its goal is variety and flexibility and to provide a good versatile core of gears that can be added to by any of the other more specialized gear sets.

Hi Aaron thank you again for these ideas. I was wondering what strength are your magnets? Mine are 120lb which are great for holding the rings down. However I think may be too strong to use on the planetary gears.
@WildGearsCreations5 ай бұрын
My magnets are 20 or 25lb I think. 120lb would be very secure and far too much for the planetary gears, yes. Honestly a fridge magnet would probably be sufficient for the planetary gears.
@dankelley10305 ай бұрын
Another great idea. This took a lot of planning and I’m wondering if you pick the pin holes randomly or are you basing your choice on a logic? and the rotating could get confusing. Have you just done it so many times or do you write out a script for projects?
@WildGearsCreations5 ай бұрын
That is a very good question! This is a core concept that I've been trying to figure out how to make a video about. You can plan a design a lot and some people do. But I like to experiment and explore without an initial direction to find design ideas. For this video and design I had the general goal of showing off the technique without over complicating it. So that gave me the first arc because a simple arc is the most strait forward thing to do with the technique. And I wanted to show a little variation in the design. I could have used a different colour for each step and that would have looked great but I would have had to keep track of more pens so I went with the other classic variation of just going up the ladder of pen holes. Then I got to the end of the arc and was like 'what can I do to show off repositioning the frame?' and the design that made it into the video was the second one I tried. Not because I didn't like the first one just that I messed up my first recording and was having trouble keeping the video short enough and the design that made it into the video was a bit quicker. To answer your question more broadly I'll start by just grabbing a couple gears and doing a few simple designs in a ring or two and see what catches my interest today. There will often be something that I like but want to make bigger/denser/confusing/more pointed/very colourful. Its the feeling of 'I like this, but can it be more ____' and then seeing if I can make it more ____. This pulls me down creative paths that I wouldn't find if I was planning ahead. It is all about looking at all the ways you can change one thing (pen colour, pen hole, gear positions, gear size, so many things) and exploring those changes and playing with them. For the rotating things getting confusing: partially it is just practice. But also it is knowing how to make it easier. For me that means adding marks to my gears to make it easier to track with part I'm counting with and finding the way to move the gear that is easier. I also find talking through the steps that I'm doing, out loud to myself helps me remember. Also, practicing being able to put a gear back where it was buy looking at the lines that you've made is helpful so that if you loose count you can put it back to the last step and try again rather than being hopelessly lost.

Related to the inner disc more so but what I used to do also was to cut a piece of foam a little larger than the outer ring and then use magnets to put it on top. This creates a little channel which helps the inner disc from coming out. Does this make sense?
