Bernstein, and anyone repeating this idea, clearly has no idea of either psychedelics or opiates if he thinks the effects of the two are even remotely related...

Beautiful piece and recording! I really wish Barber had written more in this romantic style. Thank you for posting with the score.

As a young composer he was stunning but not a Genius like Mozart. He grew slowly and.....at the end, completely deaf composed op 111, op 135 the ninth Symphony!!!! This is amazing!!!!

Slowly? He was 13 when he composed this! Yeah, it's not as great as his masterpiece but the same is true of Mozart's early works.

Bernstein is right in describing at least part of the piece as the first musical expedition into psychedelia. The first Reveries section is at times pretty meandering and at times lacking in musical sense. The rest of the piece has its moments of brilliance but Belioz was more of a master orchestrator and his pallette was orchestral color and musical movement through orchestration and figuration. The piece is rightfully popular because of these things.

For those who don't know, this piece has a story. It is about Berlioz's love for an actress and his suicidal thoughts. After hearing this piece and Lelio, its sequel, said actress realized that it was about her and eventually married Berlioz.
