enjoyed the video and it's a pretty decent historical perspective… I think you should change the title to "The rise and evolution of Ubuntu"... there is no fall and you're pissing people off. Another user expressed a desire to hear something about the origin of the name Ubuntu. That's actually very very cool name and I agree you should talk about it. There seems to be some kind of negative theme or mood about the video things about "a company" well I don't know you're getting a lot of LTS distribution for free while the same company focuses on server support to make money and enterprise? The desktop and development comes out of that and they give people jobs. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I'm a noob to the space but going all in Linux in new career and 24.04 LTS is like "damn this has come a long way" since the last time I touched it in 2002. You sound like a smart young guy, run with this thing!

Fun thing about NT 4.0 on non-x86 architectures - it has x86 emulation! But only 16-bit, not 32-bit. So you can't run Windows NT 4.0-Intel apps, but you *CAN* run Windows 3.1 apps! I have Internet Explorer 5.0 and Microsoft Office 4.3 on my PowerPC ThinkPad. They're the Windows 3.1 versions, but they run and work fine.
@DistrosProjects11 күн бұрын
I heard about that a bit after I made this video! I could definitely try that but getting software on the machine will be extremely annoying since the HDD is not easily accessible and USB doesn't work. I'd have to burn a ton of CDs.
@AnonymousFreakYT11 күн бұрын
@DistrosProjects Hah! I just bought a new spindle of CD-R specifically to make getting files to old systems easier.
@betaswithWack011 күн бұрын
this isn't quite true: MS wrote something called "wx86" for running 32-bit x86 PEs on RISC NT. However MS's emulator is quite slow, Insignia ported their one for PPC NT only and Motorola included that with the rest of wx86 in "Motorola SoftWindows 32 for PowerPC", which you can find on the Internet Archive. Additionally, there exists Word 6.0 and Excel 5.0 for PowerPC NT, although currently only Excel has been dumped. (basically there were two different releases of Word and Excel for NT, the earlier one is x86/Alpha/MIPS only, the later one was released with NT 3.51 and includes PowerPC version)
@NJRoadfan12 күн бұрын
I was actually pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get NT 4.0 on my Lombard G3 using the initial release. The biggest problem I had is that the keyboard is flaky and I was having problems with the "s" key not always working! The 20 year old hard drive also gave up the ghost shortly thereafter.

I definitely do not miss the times when WLAN connectivity required special programs. Windows XP SP2 added a native UI, but it still was very cumbersome to use. Windows Vista (despite all its drawbacks) was the first Windows version to include a more usable WLAN interface (which was then perfected in Windows 7).

@@DigiSpaceProductions I used Xfburn on Linux with a janky SATA DVD-RW drive inside of an old hard drive enclosure. Try a different disc drive or discs. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! 5:36 Never in my life have I heard someone so excited to see the Windows NT Setup screen. Must be a worlds first! Alongside installing NT to a Clamshell iBook G3. The Linux Open Firmware frame buffer does work! Just poorly. 13:05 Okay, maybe _this_ is the most excited anyone has been to see the Windows NT Setup screen. The input devices not only working, but working well, _and_ having things like control-click built into them is amazing. Like incredible attention to detail on Wack0's part. Nice choice of background music, btw. Canyon was a good surprise. Makes me wonder if something like Cuberite could be bade to run on this. I hope 2025 is a good year for you!
@DistrosProjects14 күн бұрын
Linux' Open Firmware framebuffer has been broken since about 6.2 or 6.3, see bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217328 I admit I was definitely dramatic during this video, I was just in a good mood and was motivated despite also probably having COVID when I filmed this. I don't want to be in a bad mood all the time either. I feel like the stuff I've been doing with low level Windows made me even more excited as I know how difficult all this stuff was.
@David_Phantom14 күн бұрын
@DistrosProjects Very glad you were in a good mood! Sorry you probably had covid. Glad you're better now! And I didn't know the frame buffer was actually broken. This is what I get for not updating Gentoo on my iBook G4.

On a G$ Sorbet Mac will run. It is 10.5.8 with all apps and security updated by volunteers. It is not official, but works. It may be a little slow on a G4. I have a G3. It won't work on that. I have tried installing OpenBSD 7.6 on a Blue and White G3 with 1GB of RAM and an 80G IDE hard drive. Everything looks like it installing properly, then it throws an error. I have a Radeon 128 video card which may be the problem. I don't know. I tried FreeBSD 13.2 and NetBSD and both looked like everything installed properly, the DVD spit out when it said to reboot from the hard drive, but then I get the blinking icon with the question mark an it never boots from the hard drive. I can't figure out what is wrong.

I was a Ubuntu user way back from 2008 to 2010. I migrated to it from PCLinuxOS after KDE went to version 4. But when I saw previews of GNOME 3 in 2010, I knew I wanted NO part of it, and replaced Ubuntu and GNOME with Crunchbang, which offered an Xfce version at the time. I would later return to the Ubuntu fold, but via Xubuntu, Lubuntu, and Ubuntu MATE, at different times. By then, however, I was having problems that drove me to Debian, which is honestly, IMO, much more stable and polished. Snaps? Upon learning about those, I vowed I would never use Ubuntu or anything based on it ever again, at least not as my daily driver, not even Mint. With Mint, the fact that they're based on Ubuntu, even though they did disable Snaps, just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't see why Mint is still based on Ubuntu AT ALL. If they dump Ubuntu COMPLETELY for a Debian base, then I'll reconsider. The way Ubuntu is trying to become the Microsoft of the Linux world makes them little more than a has-been distro in my book.
