One challenge is the local building codes.
@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk 7 күн бұрын
Building codes are indeed a challenge, especially since they vary widely across regions. However, there’s a promising shift towards more lenient regulations for mass timber construction as regulators are starting to learn more about it. For example, some areas like British Columbia have recently updated their codes to permit mass timber buildings of up to 18 storeys! This topic will be discussed in more detail in later video’s! 😄

In future videos it would be more exciting to delve into various case studies of various sizes be it residential, multifamily or commercial. But for now I suspect there’s lots to cover for a while.

For now, there are still several general topics to cover, such as the benefits (currently being uploaded) and the challenges and limitations of mass timber. Once these have been addressed, we'll definitely dive into more specific topics and case studies! 😄 If there's anything in particular you'd like us to explore, feel free to let us know!

So logs are cut into plywood, then glued back together to make panels... mind blown! 🤯
@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk Ай бұрын
Yes, that's right! Mass plywood panels are made by layering and gluing together thin sheets of wood veneer, which creates a strong, uniform panel with minimal defects.

What kind of adhesive is used to bind the fibers? Polymer based?
@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk Ай бұрын
Laminated Strand Lumber typically uses moisture resistant adhesives, such as isocyanate, which are formaldehyde free and less toxic. However, it can also be bonded with phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesives, known for their strength and water resistance. The choice of adhesive depends on specific product requirements and manufacturing processes.

The adhesive used in mass timber products can indeed be a concern However, the indoor air quality in mass timber buildings is generally very good! We are currently producing videos that explore the benefits, challenges, and limitations of mass timber In these videos, we will address this, and more, comprehensively!

It is probably stored in a well ventilated area for a while to let most of the formaldehyde evaporate before beeing used in construction, just a guess tho

I think we also calls these LVL / LDL in the US, What about LVL?
@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk Ай бұрын
Hi, I haven’t heard of LDL before. What does that stand for? Regarding LVL, you can certainly create beams using laminated veneer lumber. The key difference lies in the thickness of the layers. Glue laminated timber uses dimensional timber, which is significantly thicker than the thin veneers used in laminated veneer lumber. There are pros and cons to having thicker or thinner layers. We also have a video on laminated veneer lumber too if you’re interested!

35c and 80 percent humidity is normal for 60 days a year
@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk Ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! Nail laminated timber can be used in warm, humid climates, but it requires careful design and management to address moisture related challenges. The wood's sensitivity to humidity can affect its dimensional stability and durability. Proper treatment against fungi and insects, effective ventilation, and moisture control are all crucial. Overall, successful use of NLT in these climates demands thoughtful planning, appropriate treatments, and tailored moisture management to ensure longevity and structural integrity. Hope this answers your question!

@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk Ай бұрын
Hi Drumswest, As a reaction to your other comment: I'm sorry to hear you view mass timber products that way. Regarding the efficiency of CLT and DLT panels, it's true that they use more wood than traditional timber framing. However, they provide superior strength-to-weight ratios and can make use of smaller, sustainably sourced trees. Your concerns about connection challenges are valid, though recent advancements have significantly improved this aspect. You’re correct, StructureCraft is based in Canada, with locations in the US and Italy. We did mention that StructureCraft's DLT manufacturing facility is located in North America. In a few weeks time, we'll be releasing a video about the benefits of building with mass timber. After that, we'll follow up with another video addressing the challenges and limitations of this construction material. We value your insights and would love to hear about your experiences and suggestions for improvement. There's a chance we might have overlooked something important for our upcoming video on the challenges and limitations of mass timber construction, so any new information you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

do they drill holes i the planks first ? or they just punch through with hydraulics?
@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk Ай бұрын
The holes are normally pre drilled, whereafter the dried dowels get inserted These dowels then take up moisture from the surrounding panel and swell, tightening the fit In the example shown, they were pushed through with hydraulics They were probably pushed through just the last layer and this layer was probably made of very soft wood Hope this answers your question!
@siriosstar4789
@siriosstar4789 Ай бұрын
Thomas Haus uses dowels in their CLT panels and apparently have received some complaints about the houses 'creaking' during changes in temperature and humidity . To counter this , Nur Holz in Rombach uses threaded dowels in their panels , eliminating any expansion and contraction .
@PrefabulousTimberTalk
@PrefabulousTimberTalk Ай бұрын
Threaded dowels? Never heard of it, but will certainly be taking a look! This probably has some negative impact on the end of life options of the DLT panels, but that might be worth it in some cases 😄

Very interesting/informative 👍👍 Suggest appealing to supporters of sustainable construction (ie, investors) in addition to architects & designers. Timber construction has been accused of "green washing"… appearing to source sustainable lumber when it has not. So a deeper dive there would also be welcome.
