Hey I know this video is a little bit old but I'd love to get your input if I can. I created a drum multi with each drum as a separate program going to different outputs. Works great! But I'm hitting one limitation, and maybe I'm just not setting things up right. If I want to apply fx to all of the programs in the multi, I've tried doing it by using the mixer aux sends/master track. The issue there is that the effect will output on the main out. So if I mute one of the outputs in my DAW, it still comes through the main out where all the drums are sent to. As a workaround ill just use other effects in the DAW but there's a few built into Falcon that would be nice to have. Maybe there's a better way for me to set things up?
@stickster
@stickster 2 күн бұрын
I believe I understand what you're running into. Presumably, you're routing your individual programs from the multi starting with Out 2, and only the auxes are going to the mains. Of course, you could perform any muting operations using automations. Choose the mute on the specific drum Program(s) you're concerned with, and attach them to a free Host Automation lane. Now you can automate your track so Falcon mutes the right things at the right time. This won't help if you're trying to manually mute programs while mixing or auditioning, though. (You could do the above, and monkey with the automation but that's awkward.) You could try: (1) mute/unmute using the Falcon interface, rather than your DAW (easiest solution); (2) assign the Program mute(s) in Falcon to MIDI CCs that your MIDI controller issues already for track mute(**); or (3) if your DAW is capable of producing Open Sound Control (OSC) or MIDI messages from the DAW track mute control, you might control Falcon from that. (**) This may be error prone so I'd only consider this a stopgap to be used temporarily. Typically controllers have a "window" of tracks they control, and if that window doesn't stay precisely lined up -- for instance if you navigate around to other tracks using the controller -- you'll experience problems.

Anyone here knows how to save the presets externally? It says it has to use the "sysex tx". I'm quite unsure how to do it using midi ox. I'm afraid I'll lose all the presets I have mapped for days and nights. This midi controller works for me but it lacks software support.

@@markfernandez2187 most MIDI librarian software works basically the same. You set the librarian software to receive sysex from a device, then on the device you trigger the transmission (dump or Tx) from its menu system. I don't use MIDI Ox but maybe someone else does.

@stickster thank you for your response. So it would the transmission remember the order of the presets and the name of the preset once I load the ".sys" file (If that's what it is called hehe) My first midi controller was M audio code . I never had problems with saving presets because of the software editor. It is my first time to deal with sysex transmission.

Please help me out understand this. I am literally going crazy in my mind. I fail to see the difference. At the beginning of your video, you have a Synth sound fed to Delay which is then fed into the Reverb. Serial processing so to speak. Let me call this Scenario 1. And then you say how sometimes you want a dry sound to be processed with a Delay only. And Dry sound being processed with a Reverb only. Therefore you introduce effect racks with their "parallel" processing. Let me call this Scenario 2. What I want to understand ultimately is how this is different from Scenario 1. Because at some point your Scenario 2 (parallel processors) are ultimately being summed into one output in the mixer. So each processor, or both of them if you will are being "heard" at one output mixed together with a Dry sound. How the hell is this different from Scenario 1? In my mind, I understand I can get the same sound if carefully tweak the Dry and Wet controls on Delay and Reverb from Scenario 1. No? Ultimatively the only difference is in Scenario 2 is that you get "finer" controls to work with on the left side (tree) at the expense of a more convoluted workflow but in the sense of the sound you could end up with exactly the same sound in both scenarios Because even in your Scenario 2 the output of these two effect rack are mixed and summed with Dry signal and all goes into output. No? Do I think this incorrectly?
@stickster
@stickster 18 күн бұрын
In scenario 1, the delay is treated with reverb, with each echo passing through the reverb so they are heard through the hall, so to speak. In scenario 2, the delay echoes do not pass through the reverb. You will still hear the echoes, but they are *dry* and do not pass through the hall. The difference here is subtle but indeed it exists, and depending on your choice of parallel effects the difference in other cases will not sound as subtle.
@leonprofes8544

@@stickster I understand what you are saying. And thanks for your response. I figured this much alone. But follow me and tell me what is wrong with my mind? Because every time I start thinking about this I am ending up in same logic. So in Scenario 1 Echoed sound is fed into Reverb. And then output. In Scenario 2 Echoed sound is individual (controlled by effect rack and volume of it), so Is Reverb sound controlled by Effect rack. What is confusing to me is that even though they are in effect rack, they are still ending up being mixed with the Dry sound at the output of a Effect rack thus making them exactly same sounding like in Scenario 1. The only difference soundwise is workflow. Or not??
@stickster
@stickster 15 күн бұрын
@@leonprofes8544 they are literally and demonstrably *not* the same. They will sound similar, as I explained. Because the delay echoes can get lost in the reverb due to their relative volume, but not actually processed through it. This is simply a listening artifact of specific settings, not the same result. Here's a thought experiment. Set up an effect rack with dry chain #1, a delay with high feedback and a long timing on chain #2, and a reverb with small size android short decay time on #3. Now process through this chain a simple patch with a very short or zero release time. You're going to hear what I'm describing, in a highly overemphasized way. You'll hear the patch, the short reverb behind it for a short time, and then very dry echoes of the patch for a long time. None of those echoes will sound like they're in the same space with the original patch, which you hear in a small space thanks to the reverb. If you processed them serially without the effect rack, you'd hear the echoes in the same space as the dry patch. Similarly, in what I demonstrated, if you listen critically, or change some settings to emphasize the difference, you'll hear that the delay echoes sound "in front" of the patch and reverb when using this parallel mix, whereas using the serial version, they'll seem to occupy the same space. I highly recommend that you try this yourself to prove the theory.

@@stickster I tried and I hear a difference. It's not even subtle. You are correct. It was just my silly mind and my inability to understand this until I tried it and compared it. Thanks again. Appreciate your effort in explaining.

I was a fan of UVI long before Falcon. They then had the Workstation, but it was much more than a player as it is today. It was more the pre-thought of Falcon, with synths inside and very deep. I was SOOO disappointed when they took those features out that I never looked at UVI again. But in the last couple of years I started a new interest and today went for Falcon 3.1. Must say it's a long way from the old Workstation synth, but man I am already loving it. Thanks for the tip on the Effectrack.

In that ancient version there was for instance also a fully featured sampler, you could create your own instruments and not just play soundware. The current Workstation is nice and offers a lot, but a lot was taken out also. It's been so long ago, I think early 2000 or so, I don't even remember what was in it. But I do remember being very disappointed when they took stuff out. They were preparing to launch the first Falcon, so they dumbed down the player version.

Well, it is nice to see your explanation, thank you, but then I have a question: Falcon, is it a synth or a DAW? Because I have the feeling that tries to be both and I am not sure if I am a fan of that. I have the feeling that when it tries to be both the things start to be "lost in the mix". And probably that is one of the reasons why Falcon is such a computer resources hog, it tries to be more than it should, overstepping the DAW. You were talking at he beginning about "how ridiculously infinite the possibilities of Falcon are", with all due respect I disagree with that, and if you think that I may be subjective when saying that, my computer and your computer will disagree with that, because they have a very finite amount of resources.
@stickster
@stickster 9 ай бұрын
The Mixer view is simply a convenient way to look at the audio and effects options at the Multi level. Everything I showed can be done through the Main view and (for example) the left Tree pane. Falcon isn't trying to be a DAW any more than any other flagship synth. One might as well say having on board EQ is trying to be a DAW! 😁 As for limits, they are down to your computer's CPU. There are very few limits imposed by the design of Falcon itself, unlike many other synths that are in the same price range. I own a lot of software synths, and Falcon is by far one of the most efficient. Of course as you pile on additional architecture and effects, you can run into those limits. It's such a great tool to have for sound design, and it's amazing that it can adapt to numerous purposes.

I'm not sure I understand the problem you're seeing. You can absolutely use the arpeggiator with your sample. I just tested it this way. I didn't put any delay or reverb on it since it's not important to the example: 1. Drag sample onto the mapping to make a Sample oscillator with the sample in it. 2. At either the Layer or the Program level, under Event, add an Arpeggiator of choice. (I used the standard Arpeggiator and chose Line > Bass Line.) 3. Hold down any key and I hear the arpeggiation, and can watch it happening. What are you doing differently?

@smyrnian_ When using stepped values (like tempo), I don't believe there's an easy way to get the stepped value to display in the macro's value -- not without writing some custom Lua scripts at least, which may not be worth the time. But the macro itself will work fine, adjusting the stepped values behind the scenes. By the way, you can also create stepped values "behind the scenes" on any macro by using a mapper (and turning off interpolation) to step the values that get transmitted to the macro's modulation destination.

Had to watch the part about using the unison event processor a couple times to really get it - so the Unison event processor can be thought of as a "cloner"; which reproduces a signal X times (X being the number of voices selected). On its own, you just get X times the signal amplitude, but if you use it to modulate pitch; you get X instances of the signal spread symmetrically across the specified pitch range.
