A different source claimed 57,000 Germans were in this march through Moscow , but hey...few of them ever returned back home!

I cannot imagine how things would have turned out had the Germans actually defeated Russia. With all those resources at their disposal they would have been even harder to defeat.

“A schizophrenic country of blatant contradictions.” Ha! The best summary I’ve heard yet. In full control of almost every aspect of the public’s lives, the GDRs communist leaders were unwilling to the end to realize that their 45 year dictatorship was over. I’m just grateful nobody was killed as that Soviet vassal state took its last breaths before reunification. Everything there changed for the better after honest elections in the GDR occurred in 1990, as they would have at any point during its entire existence. That’s the true crime of the that regime, it intentionally kept people from bettering their own lives.

The Stasi was bluntly honest in their motto: The shield and sword of the party. Their loyalty wasn’t to the East German people, it was only to the party bigwigs. Listening to people laud that open-air prison camp today is the height of stupidity.

Thank you for this. I have also enjoyed reading many of the comments below, debating the different styles of gov't. in our past. As an old woman, I have finally come to a few conclusions. Every form of gov't seems to have some good/great ideas behind them for its people...some more than others. However, with the passage of time, it appears greed & the need to hang onto & grow in power eventually ends each system in disaster. Man can be inspired to believe he will finally figure out that one, true form of gov't that will finally work for the world, but the problems mentioned above will continue to thwart him. History does repeat itself, tho, so there is always hope for change for the better...at least for a time. Perhaps we will reincarnate as someone from the opposite side of the world with opposing views & experiences of our own...seems only fair to me.

Stalin was always trying to deflect his misjudgements and blunders at all his minions....the Winter War in Finland, his pact with Hitler, overriding his generals, uprooting whole peoples , saying the Germans were guilty of the Katyn massacre....the list is endless.
