I bought some bare root seedlings of theses at our anual arborday tree sale. Planted them on some very poor dry soil at my house, a hilltop that is a long way from the nearest stream and we had a very dry summer. 4 of the 5 seedlings thrived without watering. This surprises me because they are a bottomland species. Also interesting is overcup oaks do well on my hill and like I said my planting of these defies logical thinking. They shouldn't do so well on a dry compacted hilltop but they do.

About to put a dawn redwood in my yard in Sarasota Florida. It’s been in a pot by the pool and has grown 4 feet in about 4 months. The growth is insane

I have planted Bald Cypress and Coast redwoods at the same time in the same area, the Bald Cypress is huge already the trunk is about the size of a large bucket and its tall as a wooden Telephone pole, meanwhile the redwoods I planted its trunk is still smaller than a 2 liter bottle diameter and its only about 17 feet tall. and people say Bald Cypress is only medium growth tree? seems pretty fast to me!

That’s interesting, how many years ago did you plant them?

Also, if a bald cypress is good for your yard, a dawn redwood would also probably work great as well.

I absolutely love Magnolia macrophylla, first saw it in nature in the Florida Parishes of Louisiana (parishes located on the east side of Mississippi River in South Louisiana). The habitat there is similar to Appalachia with rolling forested hills if you can imagine in Louisiana. Great video, should have cultivated in my yard years ago. I do have a tulip tree of the same plant family. Also found in the Florida Parishes, are the species acuminata and grandiflora of the genus Magnolia. Happy Dendrology.

Interesting...I have had a dawn redwood growing in my backyard for over 20 years and it is around 40 ft. high or so, or at least I thought that is what I bought when it was just a twig! Well, looking now at the different branches and the size of the leaves, I realized it is a bald cypress and they fooled me by shipping the wrong tree! It is still beautiful and I really love it so only slightly disappointed! lol
