American exports of CDs and Vinyls are much more expensive than other countries. The manufacturing is also more expensive in Japan, so bands usually like to give a little freebie for the higher priced music

Just curious, why do so many Japanese releases contain bonus tracks, instead of the USA versions where the band actually... y'know, LIVES? Canadian bands do it too. Japan gets the CD with bonus tracks at the end and we NEVER do. Only way to get them is to pirate it. And YES, kids, the police can and will get up your ass about it. What gives?

it stems from an old tradition where domestic releases of foreign bands in Japan would have extra tracks to discourage buyers from buying cheap imports.

This is due to the tax on CDs being high in JPN.Bands normally put bonus songs on their albums to entice Japanese consumers to purchase the album.
