This video is extremely helpful! I spent a night imaging, and then afterwards trying to figure out why nothing would help the resulting AVI, it was because of the DV encoder. I followed your instructions and have had much better results.

I have a Neximage 5 and a astromaster 130EQ. My goal with astrophotography is to see details on any planet. My dad thinks all space images (which would also include your image) are AI generated. He thinks that the Earth is flat, that there is a dome. He is no ordinary flatearther. He has gathered evidence for decenniums, like for example: Using temperature meters to prove that it is coolder during fullmoon, examinated clouds to prove that you see the sides of them when they're far away, bought a solartelescope to prove that the sun is not a "burning ball" (as he described it, he didn't use filters and so only saw it as a blank circle), used binoculars to prove that boats acutally dosn't go over any horizon because you can still see them when they disapear for the naked eye, he has also fucking climbed to the highest top in my country (2100 meters above water) to claime that he could see atleast 1/8 of the country as well as tops that you shouldn't be able to see on a round earth. He has studied magnetism and claims that the earth would need to be a disk with a hole in the middle for it to work (a round earth would apperentely make the magnetism spin uncontrolled all around the globe). He has so so many more evidences and claims, and it is not only about the cosmos. For example the vaccine; it is apperentely dangerous, and he claims that people now have gotten dumber because of it, and weaknesses and braindead and all that shit. He thinks that NASA and the russian spaceindustry are like illuminati, they want to take over the world for some reason. This is what i have to deal with, and i can't prove him wrong :( Yesterday me and my dad were in the car, and i mentioned a book that i would really want to have, he was curious about what it was all about; i said science, and oh god he started spitting all at me. It was not fun that's what i can say.

@WarmWeatherGuy 7 ай бұрын
The 6SE is identical to the 8SE except for the smaller OTA (optical tube assembly). Because the 6 inch OTA is lighter you will have noticeably less of a vibration issue. The 5SE is the same except the mount arm is shorter and there is a built in wedge. You can consider the wedge to be largely useless. -- wwgeb

This was very informative! But if I set my focus onto a star using the Bahtinov mask, when won't my telescope be out of focus again when I go and point it at a planet, which is much closer? Or the Moon? Sorry is this is a weird question, but I'm a beginner, and the video said this would work, or at least that's how I understood...
@wwgeb
@wwgeb 9 ай бұрын
From a telescope's point of view the Moon, planets, and stars are all infinitely far away. Even a mountain a mile away could be "infinity" in your telescope, regarding focus.
@ZopcsakFeri
@ZopcsakFeri 9 ай бұрын
@@wwgeb That's something I had never considered, but then why would not all telescopes be just focused to infinity straight out of the factory? Is it only because of the different eyepiece FLs? And in a hypothetical world where all EPs had the same FL, a fixed focus would suffice then?
@WarmWeatherGuy
@WarmWeatherGuy 8 ай бұрын
@@ZopcsakFeri You've got the right idea. They try to make the eyepieces parfocal. That means when you switch from one eyepiece to another you don't have to refocus. It's a matter of how the eyepiece fits in the diagonal. If it one mm too high or low it will need to be refocused.

I built a 1/2" plywood case for about $30 including all the hardware. I used the packing foams the telescope and alt/az mount came in and built the box to those dimensions. They are together in the same case. I attached some heavy egg crate foam on the top to keep them from moving. Works like a champ. I have the Celestron Wedge as well and it just stays on the tripod. It is a good idea to get yourself a sturdy tackle box to put your cords, power sources, etc. I have the Celestron Plossel eyepiece and filter set and they just stay in that very nice aluminum case. For times when I do not have access to AC power, which is most times I have a 12 V auto battery and 12-120 inverter.

Sorry, I almost forgot. While celestron has a case for 300+ dollars, an 8 in celestron fits very nicely into a foot locker for 20 bucks. Spend a few more dollars to line that with 1 in foam rubber and voila. Problem solved.

Hmm, I have 2 celestron 8 in scopes. First is circa 1983/4 and has served me well over the years and the second in an evolution 8 in. Basic difference between my 8 in and that 5 in is weight for one, 8 in is approximately 50 lbs set up with equatorial wedge while that 5 in is probably 20 lbs lighter but you also give up finer detail. The bigger the scope, the more light you will capture. It all goes to personal preference. You put up a good video with very valid points. Keep up the great work.

I am elderly, frail and home bound. Just started in the hobby. Had a budget of $300.00. Everyone told me to buy a Dobsonian, so I bought a 10" Dobsonian which weighed 61 pounds. Too heavy. So, I bought a 150mm XLT with a CG-4 mount, which weighed 42 pounds. Too heavy. So I bought a Celestron 5SE, which weighed 23 pounds. Hasn't arrived yet, hope it won't be too heavy, as I am running out of credit. Chose the 5SE because it is not too heavy (?), comes with a wedge, can use the 6.3 reducer, and collects light as we as a 105mm refractor, but without the achromatic aberration. Am hoping for the best. 🙂
@SquillagusNiggle
@SquillagusNiggle 5 ай бұрын
The 5SE is a good scope. If you STILL find it too heavy, you can attach the 5SE telescope itself to a much smaller, lighter mount like an Az-GTi. The 5SE on planets is about equal to a 4" refractor in resolution, but it's a tiny bit muddier in detail because of the way cassegraine optics work; this isn't a knock against the scope, it's a physical limitation. If you tried a 102mm apochromatic refractor you would notice less detail, but a sharper image of what detail is there. For visual they are about equal (but the refractir tube is 3x the weight and 3x the price), for photography the refractor is better. For deep sky, WITH the reducer the 5SE is better. a 4" scope just can't do deep sky unless you have a dark site and superior vision. The best you will get is the brighter globular clusters. The 5SE will do better at that but again, the reducer is vital. Don't buy one of the cheapo knockoff reducers, get the Celestron one second-hand. If you find you can handle the 5SE, a 6" cassegraine isn't much heavier and the Celestron 6SE mount is the exact same as your 5SE mount, so you could get the bigger tube and mount it directly. I don't recommend 6" and above Maksutovs, they are incredibly heavy and take hours to cool down, a refractor or SCT are better.

I know this video is OLD, but... I went with an Alt/Az mount, as I'm using the telescope for terrestrial (land/water) viewing, not star-gazing. Plus, I ordered a 3" eyepiece extension tube so I can look straight-through the scope instead of using the diagonal. That's best (for me) for land-viewing: Way faster and simple. A complicated EQ mount would be extra I'd be paying for but would never really use. Same for a cellphone app that guides some telescopes nowadays, technology they didn't have when this video was made (11 years ago). At most, I'll just look at the moon occasionally, but the rest of the time, mine (Celestron Astromaster 90 AZ) I'll be doing terrestrial viewing. The red-dot finder scope that came with it is terrible, but probably can be replaced by a better one, or, just not even used. -- BR

Thank you for instruction. Although I align our Celestron by StarSense I would like to use the arrow keys on the remote control to make adjustments. Thats because the SkyPortal app for iOS is a pain in the a**e. It disconnects all the time, the arrow buttons freeze al the time and looking thought the telescope at the same time fiddle on the iPad is crap. First you have no tactile feedback that you pushing the right button, second if you push somewhere else the whole process is compromised. But I can't make it work like that, to just use the remote control for arrow keys only. It asks for the whole process in wich I can't use StarSense with SkyPortal. I'm doing something wrong?

If you use a 5 inch in dark skies you will see for example 60 stars in a particular spot. Take a 8 inch and point it in the same spot and you will see around 250 stars in tje same spot . I have a 12 inch dobsonian which will do way better then the 5 and 8 inch . A telescopes most important feature is the apreture . More light that enters the more brighter the image will be . A low apreture telescope is like having a dull low power movie projector. You get a dull image on wall and can only see the most obvious bright areas of the movie . A high apreture like a 12 or 16inch will be like a hi power ultra hd LCD projector . You can see the hair on the womans blazer in movie . That's the difference with low and high apretures

Hello I got a question.. so I own a Meade telescope that is 70mm and 700 focal length and I use the neximage burst with icap. (One the telescope doesn’t have a motorized stand) when I’m using the neximage and when It’s on Jupiter I change exposure and gain until I see bands but the image isn’t that good so I record and put it into registrax and even after I stack it it shows nothing just a blank black picture what do I do? Am I doing something wrong. And 1 thing is the neximage better than neximage 5?
