It happens to me, too with certain characters. I find that the best place to practice character voices is in the shower and in the car to and from work. It's a great way to blow off steam! hehe

Story: My players are at the bottom of an ocean, using bubbles around their heads created by the Aqua fae of the land to help them breathe. They walk into the large vast city of water, and quickly acknowledge the issue, large fish-like creatures taming through walls and harassing civilians. Their quest was to end them all. They began by killing off a few at a time, but the creatures overcame them. They retreated into a cave where they heard a loud grumble, this was the place of the fish queen. Their first move was to use their pet cat named Tom. He was a magical being who was invincible, and also doubled as a bag of holding. Ari, a rouge, WENT IN TOMS MOUTH, as the group threw Tom at the giant fish. Ari rolled for wisdom, and rolled a nat 20, leading her directly to the fishes heart. She used the explosives she had collected a few towns back and threw them out of Tom’s mouth. The fish took immediate damage. Meanwhile the rest of the group was doing worthless damage on the outside. They watched as the fish slowly exploded from the inside and out , and as Tom flew out of the flames. He softly landed on all fours, before letting out a soft “meow” before puking out Ari. My players are very interesting.

Actually, it really depends on the game the DM is running, I rarely restrict stuff, but when I do, it's to better fit the game. An example is one game where everyone is playing some form of animal. That was a race restriction, but I also restricted classes, I really only removed fighter and barbarian, but my players were cool with it, as it made sense to them, and helped them actually try to do something new.

Our current campaign restricts the magic system, but as the players unravel its mysteries, they unlock the potential for higher level spell slots if they end up progressing into a magic class. They also think it makes sense which is why it works so well. It also gives them goals to accomplish which they really love.

@@PorcinisMushRoom if you really want to help make magic feel more powerful, as a reward, maybe they can learn to use an mp system, instead of spell slots, the way I use an mp system, is your HP die, (ex wizard being a d6) plus wisdom and intelligence modifiers. So a lv1 wizard could have about 9mp for spells.

I could even fit that into a technological/magic progress late game. Then I could really throw some nasty Cthulhu monsters at them.
