When things go wrong in your command, start wading for the reason in increasing larger concentric circles around your own desk. - Bruce C. Clarke, GEN, US ARMY (b. 1901 - d. 1988)

As former US Army GEN Bruce C. Clarke so eloquently put it, "when searching for the cause of problems in your organization, start by looking in concentric circles starting at your own desk.

We were just reading today’s WSJ article about the state of Boeing. June 12, 2024. If ever there was a company that should have a disciple of Deming, it is Boeing. Boeing is in enormous danger since it disregarded much of the 14 points of management. Don’t blame on the workers or on worker turnover. Boeing just doesn’t processes in place to assure quality products! They even sold off their manufacturing of fuselages. Ridiculous! No continuity of purpose! Of course the fools running the US government did not help by instituting unnecessary lockdowns all due to a virus. Viruses are the beginning of life, they will win.

I've run this experiment several times. We throw in some extra "real life" type examples, such as coming up with a new company slogan to improve quality about half way through. We have someone who does well write a "work instruction" on how to perform the task. Every production manager in every industry should go through this.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:11 📊 Understanding statistical control: Statistical control means that work stays within control limits, indicating a stable process. 02:20 💡 Workers' contribution: Workers can only contribute what the system allows, and they must follow prescribed procedures. 07:59 📈 Predicting future variation: Control limits can be used to predict future variation within a stable system. 21:12 😔 Impact of rigid procedures: Rigid procedures without worker input can lead to demoralization and reduced quality. 28:42 🚀 Setting unattainable goals: Setting unattainable goals can lead to worker demoralization and reduced quality. Now I know why growing up everything was made in Japan. Then when he came back here to get us up to speed we were to stupid to listen to him. Just kinda discovered him yesterday and immediately see how stupid the co I work for is. Everything is the workers fault where I work. They need to study this man! Love you Mr. Deming!

"I taught them but they didn't learn it" literally means you didn't teach them. Education has a 2 part definition. 1: Learning = changed behavior, specifically to reflect the new knowledge/skills. 2: Teaching is giving your students the tools needed to make that change.

This guy Demming was a communist agent. For those who don’t know about this man, he became famous for supposedly improving “Quality” through the use of statistical analysis. He recommended that data should be gathered continuously as part of the manufacturing process. But he never recommended lowering costs, or prices. So look: If you consider quality without also considering price, then you haven’t achieved anything. Anybody can make a good five thousand dollar refrigerator. Demming was used as a Union stooge to shift attention away from the real issue: Value for money. He only talked about “quality” as if it were an isolated topic. But value isn’t the same thing as quality. People have different needs, which are satisfied by different Price-Quality combinations. So “Good Value” depends on the needs and wishes of the customer. This semantic trick of shifting attention away from “Value” to “Statistics” was designed to stop people from expecting their own personal opinions to be considered. In elementary school, children are taught addition and subtraction. That skill is supposed to help them make value judgments. Five apples for a dollar is better than eight apples for two dollars. That’s the beginning of both reason and emotion. But the school never asks the children if they would rather have apples or oranges. That would include the children in decision-making process, which would destroy the statistical data collection system. The children aren’t taught to combine their own desires with various choices because choices can’t be easily standardized. There are millions of choices. Communists claim that allowing customers to make value judgments and choices causes “profiteering”. Customers are victimized, they say, by slick advertising campaigns, so they get cheated. The communists claim that a “political price” should be offered to each buyer, depending on who he or she is. That way “deservingness” becomes the formula for determining “Value”. Are you deserving? Blacks are deserving, so they get free apartments, food, and health care. As well as subsidized employment. Veterans, too. That’s a great value for them, but a terrible value for taxpayers, and customers of the expensive, irresponsible, monopolized post office. It’s a disaster. The Post Office is under orders to hire Veterans first, even if they’re morons, which they usually are. And that gets to the heart of the issue. “Good Value” isn’t supposed to depend on obtaining political approval. It’s supposed to depend on suppliers who know how to offer the correct Quality-Price combinations. If you’ve noticed, Chinese products are cheap. But they’re a terrible value because the quality is so low. Half the Chinese goods that I’ve ever bought from Amazon broke within a month. The Chinese don’t offer good value; they offer low price. So now, we have a school system which denies the children a meaningful education. A communist government that grants monopolies to Unions without considering the needs of the customers. And foreign suppliers who also don’t consider the needs of the customers. Junk schools, junk unions, and junk imports. This all happened because of the communist desire to create “enforceable equality”. First it was a transition to the world of pure statistical analysis, with no people, only “I.D. Numbers”. (But some I.D. numbers are more deserving than others.) Then it was the idea that those I.D. numbers can be assigned “properties”. “Black” “Female” “Union Member” “Veteran” etc. Then those properties can be mixed. A bunch of people with assigned properties are run through mathematical “operations” which are either a “Union” or an “Intersection”. That yields two different kinds of political groups. The “Union” of black men and white women includes all members of both groups. The “Intersection” of black women and Hispanic women includes the members of either group who are “food insecure”. That’s a form of inequality which cuts across national boundaries. Then that statistical data is written as an equation called “The Property of Equality”. If A=B, then A+C=B+C. Therefore, various manufactured political groups “deserve” whatever it takes through the manipulation of unions and intersections to make A=B=C. But only without regard to the actual desires of the people involved. There’s only “deservingness” as a secretly-assigned value. This whole mess occurred because of the irresponsible way that technology was allowed to intrude into our daily lives. A computer can’t tell someone how to live, or what to buy, or whom to marry. And Russian Planners in Moscow can’t decide “who” deserves “what”. The truth always depends on people’s opinions. That’s majority rule. And Americans don’t want communist enforced-equality with ten billion strangers. All of those imaginary intersectional and unionized political groups don’t even exist, except in the mind of the giant Hollywood Propaganda machine. So let’s get rid of the Russian Five Year Plan, and go back to freedom of speech, and freedom of opinion without stupid mathematical equations that mean nothing. In plain English: People want the Hispanics and the Africans to go home. They’re horrible. And they also want to close the Post Office. Private companies would do a much better job. And let’s get rid of the Mafia garbage companies too. All of that paper, and plastic, and aluminum in your trash can is valuable. A real trash removal company would buy your trash, and recycle most of it. That’s a good value.

This is one of the best lectures on the education system across the globe. I come from India and has always questioned the education system we have there since Independence. Ancient India had the best education system and Nalanda from Bihar (my native place) was one of the earliest universities known for its learning and excellency mankind has ever seen. So sad to see that the same state is the most illiterate states in the whole country now because of corruption, discrimination, greed for power. I hope I can do something for a better future for my own state to start with. Kudos to Alfie Kohn for such an intriguing and harsh insight about the education system followed across the world.
