It is possible to first clean the fountain pens with clear water. If the barrel is not iron so it could rust. Than you can let the fountain pen soak in it. Don't use detergents. You can normally also lift the nib itself and the inside. Just clean it very good. Put ink in it and try it. I would say I will help you but I live in Belgium. Famous high-end pens in Europe are waterman, Parker, ofcoirse mont blanc but that's extreem expensive. Shaffer, pelikan, they have expensive and cheaper pens. Faber Castell has also fountain pens. If you have the set. A fountain pen, pencil and a ballpoint... you are very lucky... lol... good luck... I think they must be KZbin videos about how to clean the pens... ❤ Some of the pens can use trow away inkt cartridges too... ❤

What a fun collection. I don't know much about the older ones, but I had a relative that was a salesmen for specialties and some of them were writing utensils. I never had to buy pens or pencils in school in the 60s and 70s, and I still have a lot of them with various logos on them. I know Papermate and Parker were two that offered some very nice products. Have fun researching them.

The names of the pens are generally pressed into the side of the fountain pen. The orange one looks interesting and may be older than the others. Not all fountain pens have clips. Interesting haul, have fun.

Some of the mechanical pencils might have erasers too! Just very subtle caps. I picked up an old Dale Carnegie award pencil recently which has a still usable eraser very nicely hidden at the back. I haven't tried it with this pencil yet (it might not even be the right type, I forget) but I found a blog site that suggests some of the old twist ones load the pencil lead in the front and the back space is just for storage. So check online for how to refill those empty ones first. They also have some uncommon lead sizes, a few are interchangeable because of how they round up, and there are a few companies that still make them but you can also find old stock secondhand. Edit: I also forgot to add there are a bunch of different fountain pen cleaning formulas out there by different companies, some of them mention if they're safe for older pens, and there are some bulbs specifically marketed to pump solutions through the pens. Jetpens has a few and I've seen some on Blick as well.

Hullo Marty, I have a few fountain pens I am NOT rich enough to be a "collector" of fine pens. My "best" pen is a Noodlers Triple Tail Flex nib pen. I know enough not to leave them full of Ink and to clean regularly if I have a daily driver pen that I keep inked. Good luck I see plenty of good advise in the comments! No need to add confusion to the din. Good Luck and Be Well!

8:55 When you get new.pens, always rinse the nib / feed section with clear cold water to clean the dry ink that might still be there. This will help the flow of new ink as well.

4:54 Beautiful music by your dad. by the way, that nib with 5 points is to draw pentagrams, to write music...from the time when buying printed sheets was not usual. Lovely collection. The Lamy Safari clear / demonstrator, cartridges and the converters are worth around 60$ new. You got a good deal. Lamy pens are one of my favourite, indestructible, never dry out. A true loyal companion. Enjoy playing with your new pens!

Great haul, Marty! You have some nice foutnain pens in that lot! I love the double-ended ones, but I've never seen one in person. The little green mechanical pencil that was left toward the end is amazing! If you ever want to sell it, let me know. I'm interested in any green fountain pen. There is the Fountain Pen Hospital, where you can send your pens, and Vanness Pens sells bladders and anything you need to repair your pens. I believe they also service pens, too. As for cleaning, use a soft, damp cloth with a tiny bit of soap in the water, but stay away from all cleaners, especially Isopropyl Alcohol. For a thorough cleaning of nib units, you can use an ultrasonic cleaning machine like the ones used for jewelry and get them relatively cheap. I would try a pen-cleaning solution first, and Monteverde sells one that works well. You can get it at any pen store and probably on Amazon. Vanness Pens has been in business since 1938, and it's family-owned. Someone mentioned contacting Brian Goulet from Goulet Pens, but Brian admits he's not familiar with vintage pens. Good luck, and please let us know what happens!

Wow! Thanks Kelly. This is great info and I will definitely check out the Fountain Pen Hospital and Vanness. I was wondering which pens might be worth even sending in because I don't necessarily want to spend a lot of money to fix a not so great pen even if it is pretty old. I'll try to see if I can do some minor repair and definitely take your advice on cleaning. Much appreciated.

🙋🏻‍♂️ tip from a fountain pen user 🖋️Clean them only using lukewarm soapy water (no alcohol) 🖊️. Submerge the nib section ✒️ on water only to get all the dry ink out. You can use a pressure syringe to flush the water out. Leave them out to dry overnight. Once dry, dip the nibs into ink to see how they work, before filling them with a cartridge or a converter. After you decide which ones you like best, you can consider whether they are worth repairing. The pens usually carry the brand name on the nibs, to help you identify them. Such a fun find, Marty!

I think the best person to contact would be Brian Goulet. I consider him to be a fountain pen expert. When he first started his business, he and his wife worked out of their garage. I would suggest contacting him first and if he can't give you help, he can recommend people. Last I heard, he had over 400 pens in his collection. The first time I used a fountain pen, it was when I was in 4th grade. We were living in England at the time and all school age children used fountain pens. There were ink wells on the desks next to where the groove where pencils could be put. The desk top was even covered with ink blotter paper. I don't remember what brand of fountain pen I had. It was black. It had a lever on the side that I had to pump in order to fill my pen with ink. When it wasn't leaking, it did write pretty well. When we left England to go back to the States, I left the fountain pen behind. In the states, in seemed like everybody who was using pens were using ballpoint pens. Depending on the brand, they could be just as messy. I didn't get back into fountain pens until 2017. I'm glad I did. My favorites are the TWSBI Ecos. I have about 6 of them. But, I have a pen that I really enjoy using, even for writing, which Visconti calls its budget model. If you were to go to the Goulet Pens web site and look at all the Visconti pens, you would see why it's called a budget model. However, it does not write like a budget pen. There is a web site called vintage pens dot com. I don't think it is all inclusive; but, it does have photos. You might want to take a look at that page.

Hi Donna - These are great tips and I didn't know you lived in England as a child. That must've been an incredible experience. I actually have a Visconti around here somewhere, but I'm not sure what model it is. I'll have to break it out and try it again. My first impressions weren't great but I might have been doing something wrong with it that's for sure or it could have been the ink. I will check out the website as well. Thanks for the help Donna. Happy New Year!!!!

I found that the “feed” had bits of old dry ink and they would break loose and it would work then not! I found a friend who had an electro sonic cleaner and it broke off the dried ink and it worked so much better after the sonic cleaning! I had cleaned the feed with a tooth brush, I would have sworn that I had cleaned it completely! Nope the sonic cleaning was truly needed. I purchased the “Triple Tail” pen from Noodler’s and it is a wonderful fountain pen! I run the Platinum Carbon Ink through it and as long as I use up the ink or wash it out, if I will not be using it right away, it is ready to go next time, just add ink and draw!
