Going back through you building of your layout, I was looking for the height between the three levels. Accessing your staging yard must be a bit of a pain, also the height of each section of the helix looks like 3.5 inches. Always looking for new ideas to incorporate in to my rebuild.
@achb-railway11 сағат бұрын
The lower staging yard is a bit tight - but my hand does fit in there. My lower deck is pretty much level at 43 1/2" from the floor. The upper deck (the lower track) is 60" from the floor. The upper staging is 66" from the floor. The helix is about 3 1/2" of rise per revolution. Some people told me it was too steep/radius too tight (22"), but it works fine with all of my locomotives and rolling stock. My biggest diesels are SD40s, and my biggest steamer is a 2-10-2 Mehano. They are all fine with it. My longest cars are the 85' passenger coaches. Everything else is 55' or less.

Not enough of a run for me to finish my bowl of popcorn. Maybe think about putting in a gravel road going across the main and siding to give the illusion of a larger operation. At the saw mill I worked at in my younger days one track was for unloading log cars the other was for loading wood chips and saw dust. So what you have created is a side operation for a switcher which then runs around to the finished siding and picks up loaded flat cars and leaves them on the siding for collection.
@achb-railwayКүн бұрын
I was thinking of locating an old switcher at the mill.
@paulflak282318 сағат бұрын
We had a little critter which was replaced with a rail mover. Both of which moved cars into position ,the log boom as it was a royal pain to operate, was replaced with a old loader with 2 forks that lifted the logs up then tilted forward allowing the logs to roll down a loading ramp to the log feeder. The chip and sawdust conveyors feed material into open hoppers and and to be moved every 30min and 1.5hrs for each.

She did... The room was pink when my daughter was here. My wife painted it blue to make it her office, but then I negotiated a swap so she could have my office space upstairs... Nice save of a pretty dubious kit. I'm curious why you did the wall weathering after assembly instead of beforehand. I would have though that working on the walls flat would have been easier. (Just a beginner trying to learn.)
@achb-railway6 күн бұрын
Basically because of how the corners join on this kit, I really needed to do the painting after it was assembled. Better quality kits, I usually paint before assembly. Also, I kinda wanted the weathering to run down and settle on the tops of things - just like dust and dirt do in the real world.

These kits have roots in the very distant past when standards for plastic kits were not as high. They were designed from a scratchbuilt funeral home featured in an E.L. Moore article in RMC back in the late 60's. The kits were originally marketed by AHM, then by Tyco if I recall correctly. In addition to the funeral home, there was a house and a hardware store. I also used the lean-to elsewhere in combination with the garage from their brick hotel to create a small machine shop. The other "shed" was intended to be the kitchen wing of the house. (I used one of these as a barber shop.) Back in the day, I liked the colors they were molded in and found that just shooting them with Dullcote pretty well got rid of the plastic appearance.
@achb-railway7 күн бұрын
Cool to hear some of the history!. A lot of these old kits can end up looking a LOT better than they do on the box with just a little bit of effort. I have a "rescue" of an even cheaper kit coming up in my next video.
@johnbeck32708 күн бұрын
This looks like the “rooming house” kit that Model Power marketed years ago. This kit was also marketed as a”farm house” with a few different details. I built both of them. If memory serves, the base is marked “Pola” under side. A layer of paint really improves the look of this kit. If you happen to have some Campbell windows in your parts box, they should work to fill in those openings in the leanto.
@achb-railway8 күн бұрын
I’ll do another dig through my parts bin later… These cheap kits sometimes turn out better than I expect!
@user-sv4pj5jl8n8 күн бұрын
The kit is a repop of the AHM homes released in the early 1970's. They were made by Pola then Heljan and others. My own kits had made in Western Germany on the box. They are fun kits and benefit from a substitution of the windows and doors.

I have a few more cheap kits to build that I have picked up from train shows. If they turn out as well as this one, I’ll be happy!

Very nice job on that Walthers kit. I've built the Walthers Cornerstone chicken coops and out buildings and they were nicely detailed. I'm currently building a Woodland Scenics Railway Express Agency (REA) building and I took your advice on painting the walls flat black but I painted the backs of all the pieces flat back and painted the fronts with grey primer. Once assembled I'll go back over the joints with some black acrylic to keep light leaks to a minimum. There's a product called Gallery Glass that allows you to make your own window glass and it comes in clear or opaque. Cheers from eastern TN
@achb-railway8 күн бұрын
Thanks. I need to get some opaque "glass" for some of these houses. I think it will work better when illuminated.
@rogerhuber31338 күн бұрын
Walthers has their Cornerstone kits which are a more recent line (20-30 years) and they are better detailed for the most part. The Trainline are more basic kits they have accumulated from other manufacturers (Model Power, AHM, IHC and others) that introduced them in the 1960s and '70s. More basic than Cornerstone and were state-of-the-art at the time they were produced originally. You're right in that they all need painting prior to assembly to improve their looks. The black interiors really do help block out interior lights. Make sure you always save any extra doors/windows/walls and other parts for your junk box. They come in handy at times and might have provided those needed windows and doors for that lean to. Enjoying watching your layout develop.
@achb-railway8 күн бұрын
I have some leftover doors and windows from other kits - but of course none happened to be the right size!
@Steve_R8 күн бұрын
I think these "inexpensive" kits are a great place for someone to start. They can populate an area of your layout fairly quickly. As time, funds, and experience allow, they can be changed out for something different. They are also a good base to start scratch building on. The deck and balcony could be rebuilt in strip wood. And the wall parts can be rearranged or combined with other kits to make something different. Great job. Take care. Steve.
@achb-railway8 күн бұрын
These cheaper kits can look so much better than they do on the box with just basic paint and weathering - and you’re right, they can be a base for building something completely different.
