What VCA do you use for this beauty? Is there a Serge one? On the Serge Website I can only find various Filters/Function generators etc.
@CinematicLaboratory3 күн бұрын
I've been wondering about this myself for a long time. Serge is about 'making a VCA' if you need one. The top channel of the Wave Multiplier can double as a snappy VCA. You can also 'make' a VCA with the GTO, the GTS and the ANC (crossfade with silence). All filters can be closed like a VCA, but with additional filtering obviously to make really nice sounds. It's a completely different way of thinking and patching. Since I am still learning, I often sneak in a makenoise low pass gate or a Mutable Veils.

@@CinematicLaboratory well, as far as I can see is 480€ pretty reasonable in the Serge universe 🙂 Edit. Ooooh,I see...the Mixer is a DIY kit! Ouch! Edit2: on various websites it's a readymade module,on Serge's website it's a kit.Now I am really confused 🤔
@CinematicLaboratory2 күн бұрын
@@DonaldSchuster Random*Source doesn't do DIY kits anymore. The 480 price is a built one. The description also mentions banana outputs so the website has a few errors. Just look at the module and listen to the Soundcloud examples which kind of explain why one needs to pay 480 for a balanced VCA mixer with panning. It's the waveshaping overdrive :)

Interestingly- but perhaps not surprisingly- I find that I’m making more “Buchla-sounding” noises the more of these modules- and the fewer of everything else- I have in the Buchla case. And I was about to take that one step further and buy this- and then Jason Lim announced a special version of Traigh with a greyhound on it. So I bought that. The 285t will have to wait a little while…

Ok so just when I thought I was done with modular, you have really got me inspired to build a Buchla system, with these Tiptop releases. I have been a huge Make Noise fan, so the Buchla stuff is naturally right up my alley. So off hand, if I use a Make Noise CV Bus case, which modules would you fill it with for an essentially "complete" system? And would you add at least one outsider clock like a Pam's Pro? I'm thinking to base it around the 259t. My thoughts were- 259t, 245t, 281t, 266t, 292t, 296t... what else?
@CinematicLaboratory8 күн бұрын
I think you should fire up modular grid and move things around because it's hard to make combinations that fit in 2x104 HP. My top row would be 266, 259, 285 and 281. The second row would be 258, 257 on the left and 292 on the right. Which leaves a big gap in the middle. 'd use this gap as a variable. You could fill the gap with a 296 but then it's case-closed. You'd have to sequence with a BeatStep or Keystep. You could fill it with a 245, Pams, a Quantizer and MFX or FXAID. Or you can do something special like Intellijel Metropolix + Sealegs and it would really complete the case as a system with tons of production value. A full case of Buchla/TTA will always have something missing so I think this only works if you have another modular on the side...

Stazma's top case layout is also a cool starting point with Pams. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXakknuZf7F-abc

@@CinematicLaboratory Awesome, great ideas. Yea I have Modular grid setup to play around. Thanks for the suggestions. I do have an 0-ctrl too, and could throw in an OC for quantizer and other various CV duties. I have a Beads or Mimeophon I could stick in there. Possibly toss in a Clank Chaos, for random sequencing duties… or looking at that new Morphor sequencer which seems amazing in only 4hp. Pam’s for sure…

@CinematicLaboratory8 күн бұрын
Thanks for your confidence. However, I am kind of an airhead with no discipline and I don't use color conventions. Most of the time I don't even secure my modules because a layout can often change between scenes, like getting the huge 296t spectral processor in. Asking money for a service feels like a job to me, and I am happily retired. If making videos feels like work, I'd quit :). Besides, the Monotrail Channel always takes the time to make fancy diagrams and makenoise nearly always documents every step in a patch. However, I may be able to make a patch diagram series on a small set of modules to teach some more of the basics. I could then make a template in Powerpoint and do some fancy diagrams. The Buchla modules would be a great startingpoint. I recently saw a novice user who did not understand how an envelope and VCA work together and why sequencer notes still play when they don't have gates patched. I am doing this for about five years now and I incorrectly assume everybody has seen my 600+ videos and know the basics by now. Thanks for your comment, I'll keep it in mind - but there's no way you need to pay for it.

There are more brands following. Also, Tiptop is working on something I can't mention but it will fit the Buchla aesthetic. So for now, just enjoy the video and don't do impulse buys.
