This is the best 2 player version imo. It's less faffing each turn compared to the full board 2 player versions where you move other cities and roads as well. And islands give a nice challenge to the boards

Start game with 4, how? Which 4 resource cards? Overall there are 5 resources available in the game

This is awesome- thank you!! I bought this game for me and my partner, not realising it’s a 3-4 player game until we had unboxed it. We tried the more common version of the modified 2 player rules, but it seemed a bit too easy / simple. Really looking forward to giving this a go!

My wife and I use almost the exact same rules except if you build a settlement next to a water tile and you have a hidden victory point in your hand like a library, chapel, market, palace, or university, you can lay it down exposing that development card and flip over the water tile to turn it into the resource hex tile which you would have the advantage to build on at that point, while losing the secrecy of a hidden victory point in your hand

Mmmm, the official 2 player rules are better. They found in Traders & Barbarians and the Traveler Compact version (with slight differences). Explorers & Pirates also have their own 2 player rules.

Awesome dude! Can you maybe just show a clear overview of the ports? It's not visible in your video. We were able to play a nice balanced game though! 💜

I was considering when I heard "robin hood" that you could move the robber to a hex and "steal" 1 resource card either from bank or player.
@marilynclarkin

Our only question was about the KNIGHT development card. If you have more VP's can you still use the knight card to move the robber? We played that you could, but it went to the desert and no cards were robbed from the other player. The only thing I found lacking in this two player version (which I love) is any reference to the development cards.

My wife and I played a variety of different variations of 2 player Catan games. This is our favorite variation by far. It allows for strategy and a complexity not addressed in other variations. We definitely recommend this version.

"Start Game with 4 Resource Cards instead of 2" <--- wat? Which 4, then? In regular Catan, you can start with 3, 2, or 1 resource cards, based on the initial placement of 2nd settlement.

Why would anyone use the rule "No trading between players: why help your only competitor?". This doesn't make any sense, a proposed or negotiated transaction can sound good to both parties but prove to be better for only one or both. It's ALWAYS in your advantage to engage in trade negotiations, even if they're short or produce little transaction. By negotiating you're simply accounting for the opportunity costs incurred when you have a flux in one resource, ability, or temporally-sensitive proximity to a map feature. E.g. trading away a surplus wheat resource to get the brick resource I need in order to to go for longest road might be the best option. As in any other transaction in 3-or-more player modes, I simply risk helping my competitor in the process, but wager that I'll be helping myself even more in order to more efficiently use the resources the dice gods gave me. Perhaps the wheat gained by the other player let's them build the city that increases their resource income in the crucial later stages of the game. One could also simply adopt the personal strategy of not trading with the other player at any point in the game, including the beginning, so again my point, why make it a rule... ever? My best answer to this question is that it is a House Rule meant for increasing the speed of playtime? Nevertheless I would argue a trade transaction would accelerate the game as both parties will most likely benefit in the form of increased net income yielding more building and more development. What do you all think?
@anthonywu5258
@anthonywu5258 5 жыл бұрын
The no trading rule is more like an optional rule. The only thing is that trading rarely happens when its only 2 players. I guess there is much more risk that reward for trading and even if the reward is worth it, the opposing player probably won’t accept the trade knowing how much you’ll gain from it.

Here you go. These are my own notes based on the video and comments. CATAN - Two Player Setup and Rules KZbin video at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpSuZoqen7eKn9E CONCEPTS: * Problem: Fewer players means less chances to gather Resource Cards * Solution: Better access to ports, easier trading * Problem: With only one opponent, the leader can “run away” with the game * Solution: Robber has become Robin Hood * Problem: Two player games usually have less competition for territory because there is more land per player * Solution: Less territory SETUP: * Frame: Set it up as usual, then FLIP IT OVER (to water side) * Resource Tiles: Take one of each type of Resource Tiles (five), and turn them upside down. They are now “Water Tiles.” * Set up game board using five Water Tiles and remaining 14 Land Tiles, as below. (Use Variable Setup per regular rules.) * 3 Forests * 3 Fields * 3 Pastures * 2 Hills * 2 Mountains * 1 Desert * 5 Water Tiles * Remove ONE of each of the following Number Tokens: 3, 4, 10 and 11 * Combine the 2 and 12 Number Tokens on ONE tile * Water Tiles and the Desert Tile do NOT get numbered * Make sure RED Tokens (6 and 8) are NOT next to each other * Remove Ports if they don’t touch Land Tiles (see detailed game rules) (???) * Place PORTS (maximum ONE port per Water Tile) * Deal NINE cards (versus 7). Compensates for less Resource Tiles on board * Start game with THREE Resource Tiles (versus 2) MODIFIED RULES: * Robber acts like Robin Hood: * Player with the FEWEST Victory Points on the board controls the Robber, no matter WHO rolls * If Victory Points are tied, Robber acts normally * In NORMAL Catan, when a 7 is rolled, the roller moves the Robber and steals someone's resources. In this version of Catan, when a 7 is rolled, the person with the fewest Victory Points moves the Robber and steals the resources. Knights work as usual and if both players have equal Victory Points then the roller moves the Robber and steals the resources. * Bridge Building: * Bridges can be built over Water Tiles * Two spans, maximum * Building cost: 1 Ore and 1 Wood resource cards * NO Robber until each player has 3 Victory Points (gives players a chance to build faster) * NO trading resources between players (don’t help your only competitor) - OPTIONAL

So how do I "control" the robin hood if I have less VPs? It doesn't say how I use him. If I roll a 7 and/or play a knight then I control his movement? Meanwhile if the higher VP player gets a 7 or a knight he cannot use it to control the knight/robin??? I feel there is missing information here
@JohnDoe-os7so

In normal catan, when a seven is rolled the roller moves the robber and steals someone's resources. In this version of catan, when a seven is rolled the person with the lowest vp moves the robber and steals the resources. Knights work as usual and if both players have equal victory points then the roller moves the robber and steals the resources.

My partner and I just played this twice. Game play felt just the same as 3-4 players; I think I actually prefer playing 2 player now. Two things we had to do: -When we had a tie on victory points, the person that rolled the 7 would move the robber. If there was no tie, then we played like you said (lower victory point holder would move the "Robin Hood". -We have the new board, where the harbor pieces are a border (not tiles). If the "water tiles" blocked the harbor, we just didn't have access to it. It didn't have a negative effect on our games.

We tried this variant and found it worked well. My only question is the four starting resources instead of two. The rules say you get one resource for each hex around your second settlement. This means you can start with up to three normally. Am I misunderstanding something?
