If I were a producer (I'm certainly not), and wanted to come up with a catchy title for these wonderful video mobile musings, I would probably pick 'Rambling' - in all senses of the word. But these aren't confused, inconsequential or digressive monologues. They are beautiful, personal streams-of-consciousness that actually have a hell of a lot more structure to them than at first glance. And relevance. Lengthy? - yes please! - I want to take a little chunk of time out of the day, and have the space to marinade in an idea or notion. Have the space to think - isn't that the point of a good walk?

Oh wow. Why am I just finding this conversation? This is really cool. Honestly, learned a lot. Going to rewatch. On the point about spirituality and solarpunk: I think what Jay ways about "spirituality" and solarpunk is essentially true, in that there is a strain of new paganism that is tolerated in solarpunk imaginary, or misunderstood aboriginal practices interpreted by West. I often hear that Buddhism is okay because, "it's more of a philosophy than a religion." I'm going off of conversations in person and the often virulent reaction to organized religion in the conversation space. This is what I find to be a problem, since the majority of stories we're learning about and talking about are the ones written for an English speaking audience. They are not even close to representative of the majority. That audience does not seem take into account the serious organized religious practices of non-western or non-white traditions, including Christianity. The editors are not separate from the audience. And to be clear, I am a solarpunk, but my interpretation of solarpunk is always looking at ways to bridge who want to be with who we and where we are.
@Momotempo
@Momotempo 7 ай бұрын
Thanks ever so, Rob - for watching and sharing thoughts. Yeah, those of us raised in the white western miasma are struggling to see out through it in lots of ways, and there's a long way to go. But it does feel like solarpunk is a bit kin to the broad church of afro futures, and the more natural weaving in of ancient human story that solarpunk only overtly dabbles its toes in. Solaprunk can help people find many other things, I like to hope. But I think I'm guided a little by an instinct that under all the psychodrama of the modern world's endings is a soul crisis. Because of course it is - we've disconnected ourselves for centuries and fed ourselves and the whole world with traumas. It doesn't mean I want more gurus, however! I want emotional truth in our stories, in our visions of the possible. One of the key brilliant things about solarpunk is that it doesn't get drawn back into the drama, but demonstrates embodiment - getting on and practicing up new worlds of us.
@Cprwords
@Cprwords 7 ай бұрын
As for the editors, I think you'll find this batch of editors, particularly Sarena Ulibarri, would be open to more solarpunk with a capital S spiritual bend.
@Cprwords
@Cprwords 7 ай бұрын
@@Momotempo right, but this is the key: YOU might not want a guru, or a spiritual leader, but the world over, the vast majority of peoples actually DO. They actually rely on those people trusted with religious truths. And that doesn't mean going back to some form of preindustrial spirituality because those truths have been transformed over and over again to meet specific needs, specific crisis. Waiting for those people to wake up to a "solarpunk" truth outside of stories that include them as something other than the enemy of free thinking, is a particular strategy or the by product of one. I think its a missed opportunity that also decenters the subjective experiences of many of the people who will be hit by the impact of global warming first. We must recognize the spirit, before they become ghosts.

Hey Timo, its Matt. What a delight to find this. Have to comment for the KZbin audience. I’ve known Timo for a number of years as on-line friend of prestigious talents both in threads and infront of the camera, whatever the subject he chooses to broadcast on it will be riveting and the two things which are for certain is, you’ll need a dictionary at some point and he’ll open your mind to some aspect of our little local human universe that you hadn’t considered before. This is the closest you get on-line to meeting him for a cup of tea and being introduced to three of his mates. Kind of reminded me of the brilliant dialogues between Mel Smith and Grifth Rhys Jones, only this isn’t scripted. I can relate to his mates immediately, I’m a few years older, Andy saw Star Wars at 8 and I saw Star Wars at a press preview in Bournemouth age 12, saw it 4 times in 3 days and it changed my life. These guys are hardcore sci fi nerds and that’s my nirvana and for me this was so cool, can’t wait for the next episode!

I thinks a solarpunky story would have to show exactly how a non s.p. society would transition into a solarpunk one. How land is used, what power scources are used, descriptions of infrastructure development etc. Along with testimonies from citizens from said society, and their thoughts on the changes.

Your Nora intro…you could write for Sir Humphrey:) If your interested in the latest data, Chris Pine and white privilege is old news, yesterdays statistics, today its Asian privilege. Funny but Noras description of society becoming like a machine, which came out of the industrial revolution, reminds me of Dune and the Butlerian jihad and the next evolutionary step is the rise of the Mentats. Our Western political system is broken, vividly demonstrated in France today. We need some Kobayashi Maru thinking there big time! Any ideas on this in your book?
@Momotempo
@Momotempo 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's more that the Anglospheric model has been shaping Asia in lots of ways, a lot of them unhelpful. Been talking about it with a dear Filipina mate just this weekend. It's what we now call globalisation but the word doesn't cover the roots of the culture for me. The new version of Dune I was kind of meh about seeing, gorgeous as I knew it would be on the eyes, as I wasn't sure what the text would have to say to us today - but I felt it resonate with its time now, the new film. It's an interesting analogy for sure you reference there. Thanks for watching and sharing back, as ever, mate.
@Prometheus1965
@Prometheus1965 2 жыл бұрын
@@Momotempo I think words like Anglospheric and Globalisation are too broadly used and like you say don’t cover the nuances, they are almost lazy in application. What the statistics which are Government generated and I’ve read in both journalistic and academic articles tell us is that Asians are more likely to come from two parent families and more likely to attend university and for those who do attend university they achieve the highest grades and after university get the highest paying jobs when compared to white and black statistical groups. Hence Asian privilege. Not seen the new version of Dune as yet, looking forward to it.

Wow, what an interesting and engaging conversation about PLAY and its role in helping us to find solutions to everyday "challenges." As a person who lives a life of playing out in the world I found this chat quite refreshing! I realize that I'm not alone in my thinking. As Keisha mentioned, the idea that we all have to fit into this box of always chasing a goal (money, status, awards, etc) to find fulfillment in our adult lives is just plain stressful. What happened to playing? And why does it have to end at 21 years old? We're too fuckin' serious! Personally, I've learned to detach from the default template of adulting and what that should look like. I find peace in some of the things mentioned in the discussion like connecting with nature, creating art, going off grid (social media) when necessary. But also, riding my bike, skateboarding, visiting museums, or anything that doesn't involve clout chasing. You know its actually cool to try something, fail at it, and possibly learn something from that experience. I'm no longer a gamer but I would never say that I'm too old to learn. Maybe one day I will :-) Gaming as a tool for problem solving is awesome and a fun way to learn how to lose gracefully without attaching shame to it. Really I could fill this whole page up with how much I resonated with the conversation but I just wanted to say great job to the host Timo and Keisha. You guys rock!!! This was an hour well spent. Nice to know that I'm not alone in my thinking about this GAME SIMULATION that we call life. Thanks for sharing.

Mate, this is a lovely response - thank you so much for taking the time to be with us and to share this afterwards. Very encouraging. Keisha brings such an innate duality of grounded wisdom and playful energy. So much of what you say is about putting our bodies into experiences - like kids do! But as Keisha says, why should that kinetic learning stop at some rando age we call 'adulthood'? All at once, our anglosphere globalised culture tells us to grow up but keeps us immature in the ways of responsibility to life. Really apprecite your testimony here, Antwon. Ciao for now, and much peace, bro. x

Admiral Kirk when presented with the lifeboat story: “I think I’ve got this…”
@Momotempo
@Momotempo 2 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY. I always felt his handling of the Kobayashi Maru a gut reaction to life in me. Surely those rules don't apply to me? I could just sneak round the back and short the no win test. I might recognise this as white privilege now - and Chris Pine's portrayal of that moment looks smugly exactly like it - "what a clever boy I am". But the system absolutely still needs cheating. The game is rigged against us all - the winners are so lost they don't know they need saving. And Kirk's instinct was really "If we cheat the rules, maybe we can save everyone?" Which was always really my own feeling in all this. Salvation is in our own hands. But it's found in how we frame it. We are not the lifeboat. We are the tide. As Nora herself might put it: "The test is not the test."
@forewarnedfilm
@forewarnedfilm 2 жыл бұрын
@@Momotempo The emotional gut punch that is delivered to Kirk at the end of the film is exactly what Nora was talking about. By dealing with the test as just that - something that could be reframed - and not seeing the individual lives at stake, Kirk is blindsided when he loses someone close - his best friend. It’s as you’ve often said - that before you can take positive action to save anything, you first have to grieve. To understand loss. And as I have found personally, it is perfectly possible to grieve for something not yet fully lost. And in that place, you can begin.
