Let's just start here. That is a beautiful, lovely piece, and heavenly playing. Now that we got that out of the way! It's also a great study for my orchestration practice. I'm collecting a bunch of solo performances of orchestral instruments. Yes, I know what all the instruments sound like! But what I'm collecting is music that demonstrates a variety of registers, dynamic levels, and articulations. This fabulous piece and performance cover it all for bassoon!

I don't play an instrument or even understand more than the most basic of music theory or musical concepts, but there are a couple of instruments (sounds, actually) that I have come to like over the last few years. It may be there is only one... If this is the same family as an oboe, then there is one. If not, there are two. I cannot even describe this sound musically... as in "it's like a trumpet" or such like. I am sure if this were all I listened to for a few weeks, I'd develop a different "new favourite", but as long as I don't over-indulge, I find this somehow magical, transfixing, along with the oboe. Thanks.

from Japan

Rest in Peace, Peter Schickele. This song lives forever in my heart. And as the Mini-Maestro of Southern Northern Dakota at Hoople once said: "24 feet of un-ignorable woodwinds"

Sorry, I can't take this seriously. And Stockhausen was I think, at a low point in his creativity. That said, the bassoonist is a very fine player.
Excellent performance!! Very awesome contrabassoon playing!! Just one question, where can I find the orchestra music of this solo? I’ve found the piano and contra part, however, do you know where I’d be able to find the orchestra parts?
@UMichiganBassoon Жыл бұрын
The score is published by Hofmeister and I found a link to that on Boosey & Hawkes. They can probably tell you if the orchestra parts are available from them or from Hofmeister directly: www.boosey.com/shop/prod/Bruns-Victor-Concerto-for-Contrabassoon-and-Orchestra-op-98/2532804 Good luck!

Movements III and IV have the same light energetic playfulness and jovial vivaciousness as Ottorino Respighi‘s score for the 1919 ballet “The Magic Toyshop” (La Boutique fantasque), or Rimsky-Korsakov‘s 1900 fun little piece, “Flight of the Bumblebee”. I always appreciate when composers like this or others like Camille Saint-Saëns with parts of his suite “Carnival of the Animals” add something like this to their oeuvre, even if some of them are embarrassed by them in their lifetimes (as Saëns was with Carnival sadly).

I am an avid classical music fan. My mother played 2nd violin on orchestras in the US, including Battle Creek Symphony, France, and Korea. Being that she was a violinist who could play Cello as well, I'm partial to strings. That said, the Bassoon is easily my favorite Woodwind. I've always loved the sound and how it fits so well into any piece. In the countless concerts I've attended, I always look forward to the Bassoon pieces. You are amazing.
