This is incredible useful. Thanks for pointing out that it is okay for the model to look very weird when you are still working on it. Its something that always makes me worried Im doing something wrong.

Why do you boxmodel the base mesh? Wouldnt be sculpting -> retopo -> sculpting be much faster? Esp. for organic characters?

That is a great question, and the main answer really is that it depends on the project and the artist’s preference/skillset. • I often find blocking out in Maya to be faster initially to capture the proportions quickly when I have image planes available. • It allows us to use UVs as polygroups, which can make isolating body sections, such as the torso, arms, legs, head, etc. a lot faster and easier while doing anatomy study. • In some instances, it can also serve as a base for our final topology for animation. The reason I am specifically taking this approach in this course is because it is geared towards beginners, and the skill required to achieve this block out is substantially lower than it would be to sculpt the block out. • All that is needed is a knowledge of basic modeling tools in any 3D application. • It introduces the idea of sculpting topology, allowing learners to understand what makes good sculpting topology in a more-hands on approach than automated tools. • It also introduces students to organic modeling with polygons if they are not familiar with it Speaking from my own professional experience, artists don’t always have access to ZBrush. I worked at a small mobile game studio for a while, and we only had access to Photoshop and Maya - we did not have licenses for Zbrush or other sculpting applications, so character creation was restricted to Maya. In terms of pipeline, a proportional block out in a 3D application like Maya can also be more pipeline friendly, as the block out mesh can be handed off to the rigger to set up the control rig with. Once that is complete, it can be passed on to an animator for prototype animations before the final modeling it complete. This can be extremely helpful in a video game pipeline, where the low poly block out heavily resembles the final game mesh. Often the skin weights can be transferred, cutting back the time to develop a character. So in short, in an individual artist’s pipeline, it can be faster to do everything in the sculpting application, but when it comes to beginners, learners, and people working in a pipe-line environment, there are quite a few advantages to this approach. This is a long-winded answer, but I hope it helps answer your question. Thank you for asking 😊

Thank you so much for making this series! It was really helpful for me trying to get back into 3D and game development after a few years of doing other things. Also happy to learn about substance painter which I have barely used before. My barrel turned out nice. Would love to see more guided tutorials! :)

I am glad you found this series helpful! I should have time to make more mini series like this soon now that my Anatomy course is finished and up on Udemy. If you have suggestions on topics, feel free to comment here or send me a message. :)

Dude - what a brilliant, succinct explainer! Ive been a 3D animator/compositor for years - fluent in Maya/After Effects and have always relied on old-school layer renders - exporting beauty, occlusion, shadows, mattes etc as separate image sequences - this AOV technique is going to save a TON of hard drive space!

I believe if you had selected the option box for Render Sequence, you can select the camera there, and avoid the workarounds.

Howdy Andre! Long time, no see! I wish I knew the syllabus thing like 6 years ago! Still happy I went to college though, learned what parts of the pipeline I like and don't like. Plus having deadlines is nice, im not great at setting up my own deadlines - and lets be real, i sometimes struggled with set deadlines lol. I think i turned in late assignments to you a few times. Solid work, just time management is a struggle. Happy i found your channel though. Will definitely be utilizing some of these vids! Hope you're doing great!

Hey Jessi! I am doing well. The syllabus thing was an interesting thing I realized when building curriculum for a Bachelor program. For reference, I was looking at what other schools were doing, and realized if you can access their syllabus you can essentially take the class for free by researching. Having deadlines does help. It takes discipline to set them up for yourself outside of a school environment. It helps if you have motivation like a competition that has a turn-in date.

Hello, thank you for the feedback. This is more of a process series than a tutorial, so I don’t explain things as clearly perhaps. Can you let me know what doesn’t make sense so I can revise it? I suspect the context as to why we are making a low and high mesh? If that is it, check out the next video in the series that goes over UV unwrapping and baking the High Poly detail into texture maps for the low poly game mesh.
