5:00 Waldner enjoying a good game of cat and mouse until he realised that he was going to end up as the mouse for once. 😅 Waldi ultimately won it but, boy did he look tense and that definitely did not happen often.

For those wondering about the style. TT was often played on wooden parquet being slippery as hell, jumping around the table like today was almost impossible. Players at that time had to move sparsely, played more "from the wrist", and with more spin due to the smaller ball. Klampars backhand is a good example and was difficult to control even for technically advanced players like Waldner.
@TableTennisMedia8 күн бұрын
Waldner emulated that backhand from Klampar, Schlager's forehand topspin is clearly inspired by the great Hungarian. He was kind of ahead-of-his-time player. His technique wasn't that flashy and he rarely had long rallies away from table, but it was efficient. Now we have many Europeans who play more attractive table tennis aesthetically, but they don't have any achievements.

Klampar played closer to the table than Jonyer, with a very individual style that could never be taught. His counter loops, taken on top of the bounce, were devastating. His backhand was also very powerful. He also had great touch. He could be very mercurial and at times, almost casual. However, peak Klampar in the right mood, was almost unstoppable. Even the Chinese feared him.

Legend. In the later 70´s, when I started to watch TT, I always thoght he should use "Hammaren" more often. I didn't realize that skilled opponents wouldn't let him do that. Suffered from many injuries, but a pleasure to watch. My first blade was a Stiga Kjell Johansson. And the footage is sensational, Thanks.

As a young player I was inspired by Mr. Lieck. But staying close to the table and blocking in the 80's was not so easy (at least for me!) so finally I had to play mid-distance defense. But blocking is still my favorite technique, it 's like Judo, you use the speed of the opponent against him/her.

Everyone who knows Wilfried Lieck knows what a humble person he is. Always friendly and smiling. He used to be a teacher and the kids liked him very much

I would say obviously if you dont have the EXACT dimensions of Malong your not going to hit EXACTLY like him. But that does not mean you cant have a good quality shot smiliar to his. Itll just be your own. If you done any football/ boxing training you have the strength and endurance you just have to translate it through perfecting your forehand stroke, relax at beginning and tense at time of contact. Obviously you have to judge what kind of ball is coming over, weather to loop, drive, or smash

Awesome! Carl Prean was standing a bit in the shadows of other world top players at that time, even though he had a lot of talent. Also with the short pips. So nice that you dedicate a video to him^^ Btw I got to meet Waldner & Persson at the start of the month in person near my home village. Such nice sportsmen and persons, too^^ No wonder, Waldi is my idol.

When I was 13 playing on a county level, I would model my back hand loop on Gruber. In all honesty all we had were a few pictures from library books. Nevertheless, it’s amazing how a young kid can learn so much from still pictures. Needless to say my backhand loop would shock under 18 county players too. Bygone days.

2021 was particularly annoying. A fit Timo Boll straining all his skill and tactical ingenuity to claim a set off FZD, would have been a much better final than the one-side massacre we got because Moregard, rather luckily, beat an injured Boll in the semi.
