You don’t need a heat mat to start seeds? I read you can’t use a heat mat and humidity done at the same time so how do seeds germinate? With just lights and plastic wrap?
@sulkoma2 күн бұрын
but glad wrap and plastic cups that get chucked out are just littering the planet something that you re-use is better
@InTheGardenКүн бұрын
I definitely try to reuse my supplies. I will reuse the plastic cups for at least 3-4 years, and longer as long as they don't crack. The plastic wrap does get tossed after each set of seedlings, but the amount of plastic that gets thrown out is much less than even a few produce bags at the market. There is always a way to produce less waste, but this system is good for reusing supplies.

Do you try to leave a half to one inch of water in the roasting pans all the time or do you let it dry out a bit 1st before adding more water? Great video. Thanks.

I went to Lowe’s today and no one knew what I was talking about. No one in the lumber dept could recommend the right type of lumber for this project. What do you recommend?

Pressure treated 2x6
@BritishWestIndian14 күн бұрын
@ the one thing they did say is that they don’t cut pressure treated lumber 🙄
@InTheGarden14 күн бұрын
You can use any normal lumber. 2x6 fit nicely in the blocks, but you could also use 2x4 or 2x10. DON'T use pressure treated lumber.
@page1digitalmedia54414 күн бұрын
@BritishWestIndian did it 2 years ago but ok. Not everything on youtube is 100% correct
@page1digitalmedia54414 күн бұрын
@BritishWestIndian most people's knowledge is on OLD pressure treated lumber. The new stuff is alot safer AND you'll e covering the inside with plastic. Common sense is advised.

Hello there, how long should I leave the water in the tray?
@InTheGarden14 күн бұрын
The water stays in the tray the entire time, meaning you don't drain it. However, don't add more water until the trays are dried.

My notes for this video. Tools needed: Hole punch that grabs onto the hose. Tube cutter. Items needed: Y-splitter for faucet. Timer. Pressure reducer. Adapter (with screw fitting preferred). Inline shutoff valves. Two sizes of tubing: large and small. Large you can choose either 1/2" or 3/8". Small is 1/4". Hose coupler connectors to connect big hose to little, one for each plant. Small T connectors if I want two hoses to come out of a hole in the big tube. Small elbow connectors (probably don't need) Large tube T connectors. Large tube elbow connectors. Drip emitters for each plant. Clip stakes for each plant. A few goof plugs. End cap for end of big tube. Directions: Need two sizes of tubing: large and small. Large can be either 1/2" or 3/8". Small is 1/4". Have the large go from one end of a garden bed to the other and then have smaller hoses go off of that to each plant. You can bury the large tube or not. Just needs to be a few inches underground, not feet. Bury it under the wall of the bed and then have it come up which looks better than draping over the outside of the bed. Drip emitters go on the end of the small tubes. They range from .5 gallon/hour to 1 gallon/hour and more. Standardize with the same size and if a plant needs more water just add another hose to it. 1/4" connectors will connect the small hose to the big hose. They come in T's as well so you can have two small hoses come out of the large hose. 1/2" or 3/4" connectors will connect big hoses to eachother (called a coupler) or change their direction (with elbows or T's). Get them the same size as whichever size your big tubing is. Get a few goof plugs which you plug in to the large hose wherever you put a hole in it that you accidentally didn't intend. A shutoff valve can be installed inline on the big hose. You cut the hose and put each new end on each side. Good if you have a section that you don't want to be watered for a time. A Y-splitter let's you connect a hose to the faucet as well as your drip system. Definitely need. It is first thing to install on the faucet. Timer is the second thing to install. Connect it to Y-splitter. Analogs don't use batteries. His lasted 6 years. Once you connect it, turn it off and turn the faucet on to see if there are any drips. Third thing to install which attaches to the timer is the pressure reducer. Fourth thing to install which connects to the pressure reducer is the adapter. Some have a screw fitting to make sure it holds on to the hose extra tight. Should have a screen inside it which keeps debris out of the system. These should all have rubber washers at each connection to prevent leaks. To connect small hoses: Use hole punch tool to make hole in the side of the big tube that you want small tube to go. Cut the small tube to the length you want. Add a few inches to the length so you can adjust later if need be. Don't get dirt in the tubes! Use a 1/4" coupling to attach the big hose to the small. Install drip emitter to the small tube. Use a clip that has a stake to stake the small tube in place. Before running the system, flush it. Open the end cap on the big tube and have water flush the system.

What was your total cost.? Also.was this pine wood? Ever thought of the shou sugi ban technique.?
@InTheGarden14 күн бұрын
Total cost, including filling with soil was about $600. The size is about 96 sq ft. Yes it is pine. I've never heard of that technique.
@whatsgrowingon14 күн бұрын
@InTheGarden check it out. It's a technique used for over centuries in Japan. They usual use cedar and they char it and sand it down so it has a beautiful black color to the cedar . It helps for insects and mold prevention. Being cedar it already has that naturally but it amplifies it more. Then it's sealed in a natural oil like tung seed oil. Gives it a shine and beautiful look to raised beds or just siding for a beautiful home. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
@whatsgrowingon13 күн бұрын
@@InTheGarden also. Shou sugi ban technique will also help extend the life of the pine your using for the raise beds. So it won't rot as fast. I had a pine raised bed before and it rotted in like 4 years . If I would've burned it and sealed it using Shou sugi ban ,it would have lasted double maybe even triple the amount of years....of course it being untreated pine it won't last forever but hey...just something to think about that won't break the bank. Much love man

How do you control nats in your grow room?
@InTheGarden14 күн бұрын
I haven't had any issues with Nats, but ideally you would want to make sure the top of your soil doesn't stay wet constantly and also placing a fan blowing on the plants can help.

I have a very similar setup with three 48" LED shop lights, 4500 lumen, 5000K, 40 watt above each of two shelves. The seeds are started in 12 oz cups in a standard 10" x 20" plastic tray, sitting on a heat matt, with a clear plastic lid. The seedlings are transplanted when rootbound and I have ended up with tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers in one gallon milk jugs before being hardened off and planted outside. While indoors all flowers are removed. Works like a charm and early harvest.

I've got a 100L tank on a balcony which has relatively low pressure. Is it better to run 13mm poly of it into 4mm tube or just all 4mm tube ? to maximise the pressure ?
@InTheGarden14 күн бұрын
It won't really matter. Unfortunately, using a tank as your supply will almost always result in low pressure without the help of a pump. You get about 1 psi of pressure for every 2.3 feet of elevation of your source above your output. So, in order to have your drip system at the proper pressure, your tank would need to be over 50 ft above your garden.

I am wondering, and I hope you can help me out . What kind of waterpressure regulation enhancement I need to use, when I would like to connect a waterpump (which pumps up the water about 7 meters depth, with a maximum of 3.6 Bar) to a micro drip system. What diameter of piping I should use, before I connect it to the "neighbourhood"lines of 1/4" ? I hope you can advise me... Thanks in advance.

Newbie here: I live in central Florida zone 9b. I have a 6 tiered stand and all the trays and pots (no lights yet) and have started planting some of my seeds. Would I be able to start my seeds on my screened back porch (no direct sun) or would it be better to do it inside? I have cats so I was afraid they might mess with my setup and pots. If I did do this on my porch would I still need the lights?
