A dirty trick with Scenic does not want you to know, buy the latex bottle and apply it to the mold, unit you reach point where it is fairly rigid and the new mold will have a very long time. Same for the tunnel portals.

I have worked on the RR foe 33 yrs and I and I have never seen a tunnel portal that looked like that. The RR always bought block or stone in the same color every time. I would to see a tunnel portal somewhere that looks like that. John Gags
@SPSteve2 күн бұрын
Stone is not uniform in color, it varies. I'll admit that my stone walls, abutments and portals are stylized and the colors exaggerated. But that is not an uncommon practice in modeling. Since the objects are 87 times smaller than life size, some colors are exaggerated to make them noticeable. This is how I do it and I'm good with it. Everyone is free to do their modeling however they choose. It's a hobby, you do it your way.
Love the videos!! I like how you show each step in your process. You definitely do not seem like you are new to this. Can I ask what your Dirt Mix made from? Thanks!!
@SPSteve2 күн бұрын
Thanks! I'm new to model railroading but I'm not new to modeling, I built armor models for a few years. Modeling is modeling. My dirt mix is 2 parts dirt from my yard and 1 part dirt from Sedona AZ. I appreciate you watching!
@jaybailey43342 күн бұрын
Question. You first added some dirt into the tunnel but you mixed in ipa. Why??? I’m new to this.
@SPSteve2 күн бұрын
I mixed the alcohol into the dirt because I needed to fill a small gap at the bottom of the castings. Having the dirt wet where it became "mud" kept the dirt stuck together and allowed me to fill the gap and shape the dirt. I used alcohol instead of water with the dirt because I use alcohol when applying scenic glue.

nice video Steve, how did you make the casting ?
@SPSteve2 күн бұрын
I mixed hydrocal plaster and let it thicken up a little, then I applied the plaster to the mold. Once the plaster had hardened enough I flexed the mold to release the casting. The thin ABS mold isn't the best quality and I'm not sure you'd get more than a few castings out of it before it would break. But if you don't need many it will do the job.

Love everything about your layout! My father was executive officer with the Southern Pacific. In charge of the Communications department as the Assistant General Superintendent of Communications - System. The railroad had many firsts other than just being a railroad. That communications department was the largest privately owned microwave system in the world when he headed that (along with the General Superintendent- System). At one time SP was the largest private land holder in California. My father was one of the first management trainees. They sent my to UTEP for 3 and 1/2 years and that was all he did. 3 and 1/2 years for electrical engineering . At the end with the communications department that they had they developed a company called the SPCC. From that they sold it and it became the company you know as Sprint. Thanks for being so incredibly meticulous.

Jerry, my Locomotives are Athearn Genesis and Scale Trains. I also have 2 Bowser locomotives. My rolling stock is Moloco, Arrowhead, American Limited Models, Exactrail Platinum, Tangent, Athearn Genesis, Rapido. I only buy the premium level models, but other levels of quality are available. Athearn RTR, Scale Trains Operator, Intermountain, Exactrail Express, Walthers offer mid level quality at more affordable prices. There is a tier of low-cost budget models as well. The premium models get you all the fine details of the real equipment but a mid level model will typically run as well on your railroad if you don't need the extra realism. I typically buy Scale Trains locomotives direct, but otherwise there are many vendors. I'd recommend looking around before buying and see who you like and who has the best prices for what you want. Some places to start might be Trainworld, Model Train Stuff, Lombard Hobbies and Ebay.

@SPSteve9 күн бұрын
@@jerryebner159 I have SP and Cotton Belt box cars from Athearn Genesis, Moloco, Tangent and Rapido. They all make nice cars. I buy the Moloco cars direct from Moloco and I usually buy the Tangent cars direct. Athearn Genesis and Rapido I get from Trainworld or other online vendors. Keep in mind that cars and locomotives are made in batches. When they sell out they are gone. If out of stock with one vendor, then look at another and see if they have some. Manufacturers will often reissue a model but it may be several years before they do that and almost always will be different road numbers. I will often do a video on cars I buy. You may want to look at some of my older videos to see if I have videos of cars you're interested in. If there is a specific car you're looking for I'd recommend going to the websites of the manufacturers I mentioned above and seeing what they have. You can buy direct or look for a vendor where you might be able to get a discount.
