In this film, Harpo is playing a loom, which sounds nothing like a harp. The music was actually played on a concert grand harp and dubbed into this scene.

Beautifully played and a real fun one for a change. It’s amazing how they made that harp. And that’s a real American Indian flute. 🌷🌱

One thing I've always loved about the Marx Brothers movies is the musical performances by Chico & Harpo. Chico plays piano whimsically, at least one time without even looking at the keys, but still with incredible talent. Harpo, when he plays harp, stops being Harpo and the harp becomes his entire world - and again, with incredible talent.

Wowee! Thanks, Fritz! for sharing this with me. It caused me to think how short (seconds--like TicToc) significant experience are for so many these days and how much longer (hour or so) they were in my daze (movie).

Harpo did for the harp what the 2 Cellos duet have done for their instrument, but he did it decades earlier; making not-so-classy classical instruments cool.

They lived in a racist era, but tried to present other people more favourably than was the prevailing norm. Being NYC Jews who toured the south doing vaudeville in their early days made them aware and sympathetic to the culture's harsher side.

Song is "From The Land Of The Sky-Blue Water" (publ. 1909), which was a hit for Native American singer Tsianina Redfeather Blackstone, & later familiar as a jingle for Hamm's beer. Of course Harpo isn't really "playing" the weaving loom; in fact, all musical performances in movies in those days were recorded separately as audio & then the visuals were filmed miming along... This is what Harpo did in all the Marx Brothers movies, & in many cases his visual performance matches the audio so exactly that you'd swear he's playing it live before the camera, but no...

Part of the fun of a Marx Brothers movie was seeing the various plot devices the producers used to work Harpo's harp soli into the film.

There is absolutely nothing today, that can compare to Harpo's musical talent, and just how funny he could be. I have most of the Marx Brothers movies and I watch them. The best parts are when Harpo plays. He's top side now, playing for the Big Man,and chasing the odd Angel now and then.

I know it's over a year since you wrote your comment, but you ought to search for Paraguayan harpists. For some reason, it became a folk instrument, and is a staple of regional folk music. There are many outstanding harpists down there, and well worth checking out.

All of the music that Harpo played in all of his movies was him. Because it was layed over from the studio to the movie doesn't mean it wasn't Harpo. The man was talented

I'm a flutist and also have a Native American Flute. They're played quite differently. Although the sound on good Native American flutes is beautiful, I really think that the sound being heard here is from a regular flute. - If there's any proof to the contrary , I'm happy to check it out.🙂🌹🎶
