Interesting build you have here. I have been working on this kit on and off for 10 years, converting it to the I-58. there's a lot wrong with this Lindberg baby so I had to do a lot of research and adjusting..still not finished. Your version is looking nice! 💥👍💥

The full plastic kits are so much better than resin+metal for building. I'm done straightening metal bits on models just to knock one over and have it bend again.
@erebus19642 ай бұрын
Keeping some information in the web in mind, this Lindberg Kit is quite far off the original. But to build a correct model, the necessary information is not easy to find, since there is not a lot of documentation left. I got my hands on one of these models too and I was thinking about building a RC submarine out of it. The sheer size really cries for it. Nice work anyway!
@chrismodelingworkbench56402 ай бұрын
Very true, the bow of the real ship is shaped differently, the hatches on the deck are massively in the wrong scale, those are the worst points off the top of my head. In this case I just didn't want to fight with all the inaccuracies. I have some majorly detailed projects coming up, so this one was more for fun. I toyed with the idea of turning it into a RC sub as well but I don't know enough about RC subs. LOL

Hi Chris! Good video! I just trying to assign Confederate flags to each brigade but I found it quite confusing (Union is much more easy). Can I ask You how You did it? Thanks, Paolo
@chrismodelingworkbench56405 ай бұрын
I started out with assigning the flags with the units that fought at Gettysburg. I agree it can be quite confusing with the Confederate armies. Unless you're going to be a complete stickler on historic accuracy, and can recognize regimental & company flags at a glance I'd advise you choose a army/division to model (like the Army of Virginia) and just use the flags associated with that army group. As you build your collection you can model other armies in the Confed.

I'd do a first layer of the sea to get it smooth, second layer would get painted after the boat had established where it would sit, but without the boat in place. Then place the boat as you had done. I like the idea of signing paper on the bottom inside the bottle. But that sure is a small ship in a small bottle :) I'd need a bigger bottle and a bigger ship.
@chrismodelingworkbench56406 ай бұрын
This was a very basic kit.. I usually do larger ships in bigger bottles. That might be a good idea for another video. Good point on the smoothing for the sea! Thanks!

Looked good but you transposed the flag poles and rings at the steam escape stack locations. The rings should be in the holes on the skylight deck where the stacks are mounted and the poles should be on the deck below. So the reversal makes the stack rigging incorrect! Oops!

Am now building that same kit and my approach is to read the instructions 10 times and watch the applicable you tube videos several times before diving in. In your video, I liked the red lettering with a yellow border idea so I did that on mine. Will also put lighting and a micro bluetooth unit in it to play "Waiting on the Levee" Calliope music. Hi Chris. I served with VP 90 from 1985 to 1988 and I distinctly remember flying on LX 00 a few times. I worked in WC 050 Supply. In watching this video though and looking at your rendition of the aircraft, I am curious about a couple of things. First as I recall, the Lambert the Lion logo on the tail was discontinued before I reported in January of 1985, due to a copyright issue with Disney. At the time I left, we were using the "Lowenbrau" red lion with the pitchfork on the tail and the squadron patch. Also, did the marking scheme get changed to where the "VP 90" was placed under the forward observer round window? I have a picture of LX 02 on my wall and that marking was usually found under the NAVY marking near the rear of the aircraft. Overall the diorama looks great. I was just wondering if the marking placement had changed after I left to reflect what you show on your model. Thank you for your service and I look forward to hearing from you!
@chrismodelingworkbench56402 жыл бұрын
Hay there fellow VP-90 allum! You were there just before me! I was in VP-90 in '88. This diorama is based on this lithograph: planejunkie.com/sorry-charlie/ and the story my father told me about a deployment of his on LX00 to Misawa Japan, (I never got to Misawa myself). I believe they dropped the Lambert patch in late '84 - early '85. not sure exactly when, while I served we had the lion stabing the sub and then the brown and orange lion face. I left VP-90 in '93. I hope you enjoyed the video!

Did you do any priming? (I really wished that I'd watched more videos with folks painting before assembly....) edit: one small disagreement on color-choices: no ships during this period had yellow gaffs or booms for the spanker; like the yards, they were always black.
@chrismodelingworkbench56402 жыл бұрын
Yes I did prime, the primer was pretty much the came color as the unpainted plastic. I did not know that about the gaffs/booms. Thanks!
@jtm12832 жыл бұрын
@@chrismodelingworkbench5640 Cool. Thanks. One time-saving trick when you prime is to use, e.g., Army Painter Daemonic Yellow primer on the masts for most ships, so you only have to do the yards and furled sails. You can also use this on the hulls, as the yellow on French ships is very close to the same. I haven't see a "baby vomit" (yellow ochre) primer to do the same time-saver for British ships. Oh, and if you look more carefully at the gunwales (bulwarks) of the frigate between the fore and main masts, you'll see that it was actually a pile of netting, not wood, so it really ought to be some shade of white.
@pepebonoperals70372 жыл бұрын
I have ordered black seas this week and your painting method is the same that I was thinking in, but also watch on KZbin people painting with the ships assembled... Painting the ship before assemble give you more control and get better details. Thank for your video, it was very demonstrative!!

@@chrismodelingworkbench5640 Me? I plan on using these models with a 1980's rule set called BEAT TO QUARTERS by Command Decision. Thanks for the Video, and I hope you go on to make more videos - especially of your wife playing the game as well. My wife also games, although she's never played a wargame. She is however, REAL interested in painting the Black Seas warships. She does NOT want to do the rigging however. One thing I don't like about the rigging of ships with plastic ratline sheets is - they're sheets. I am SERIOUSLY considering trying an experiment where I cut out as much of the "space" between the lines - paint the acetate so it doesn't reflect a shiny light, then mount ratlines for each of the steps of masts involved. I'm also considering an old modeler's trick of heating the plastic (carefully!) and twisting the yards on the upper parts of the mast so that instead of being perpendicular to the center of the ship, they slant a bit, as if catching a wind off the quarter. I also plan on trying out the idea of using uncooked tea bags (stealing from my wife's tea consumption a bit alas) - and using my own sails. The idea I have for the flying jib sail (and other jib sails) is to cut them in such a way as they can fold together to form the jib sail. This way, I can have the sail wrap around the stay and be better anchored. For what it is worth, I've picked up the merchant ships from Black Seas, the Schooners, as well as various fleet boxes. I plan on using some of these ship models for a rousing game of GURPS SWASHBUCKLERS where the players have their own privateer. Of course, the Spaniards will still hang their characters as pirates if they're caught... Dang, now I have to watch the movie SWASHBUCKLER again.
