I remember an article some years back where the diy’er flipped the arms 180 degrees and it became an uplight instead of a downlight. I might try that with the big bulbs you got and paint the socket covers. Thx for the video!

I wanted to do this but decided on a plastic bin because I was worried that the galvanized can would rust out. Did you treat the cut holes to ensure protect against rust and if not, has the bin rusted out?

Evidently you're not a handyman. You don't use a wood bit to drill holes in steel or aluminum.

the metal bits pull out sharp jagged edges both ugly and dangerous, much more work to get the holes started where you want them ect... the list goes on. I have tried several bit styles, many get metal debris caught on them which interferes with progress (try it for yourself)

I used the same idea with a metal barrel. After 4 weeks I am not seeing any composting. The flies are gathering , the smell is not nice. I put more holes that you did for ventilation, I added enough water, I turned the compost once a week. I also added compost accelerator. I believe that the compost should stay in a net 3 cm away from the walls of the metal bin to ensure ventilation. Will test my idea soon. I posted this comment for: not try this at your home. Yet!

Fantastic idea, love the video! I'm going to try the same thing but with a repurposed 55 gallon metal drum and see how it works for me. Side note, that drill bit is called a paddle bit, the hole saw bits are the ones that have teeth in a circular pattern.

Hi Tonya! So thrilled this might be an option for you, Im sure it will turn out beautiful! These are the exact ones we used: www.destinationlighting.com/item/bronze-light-socket-cover/568446 If for any reason that link doesn't work it is also in the description box of the video. This was our first time ordering from Destination Lighting and we were really pleased with the customer service! I'm sure you could grab them on Amazon, at the time we looked last year this was seriously the only option! I think it's a 50 dollar minimum for free shipping so we grabbed out bulbs from them too. Happy shopping and please let me know how it turns out for you!

Hi Angie! That is such a bummer, I even went back to my old confirmation email to look up my order details and that link is dead too. But don't worry, there are plenty others just like it! This is a 60 watt g40 globe, and I believe it was 5 (maybe 6!) inches in diameter. If you look up those specs you'll find plenty of brands, stores, and even styles of glass. Happy shopping, I hope you find something you love and thanks so much spending some time on the channel!

Hey Ken! Thank you so much for watching and for reaching out! We used 2-1/4 inch prefinished. I believe the previous floors were site finished, so there is a microscopic difference in the bevel but overall we are so happy with the results and would be confident doing this over and over any time there are real hardwoods that can be saved!

Why did you elevate it off the ground?
@BuildingHome
@BuildingHome 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike! Air flow and oxygen are critical to the composting process, so the holes drilled into the bottom of the bin and having the bin raised allow for air circulation from top to bottom. It has allowed us to leave it pretty passive and also kept the bin from getting bogged down with too much moisture as we live in a pretty rainy and humid climate. I hope that helps!
@_MikeJon_
@_MikeJon_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@BuildingHome ah well I live in the PNW so I too have to take those into consideration when doing projects like this in my climate. I've made a couple of these and they work great! However I used plastic bins, but that isn't too important I reckon. Anyway, this video came into my feed. Figured the airflow would be just fine with all the holes drilled in the sides. I personally don't drill any in the lid to help create a micro climate which is really helpful for the mycology. Contact with the soil is key too, imo. Especially for fungal and other soil organisms hence my question. Sure worms will find their way up but other creatures and organisms may find it a bit more of a task. I was just curious if the pros outweigh the cons in your experience.
@BuildingHome
@BuildingHome 3 жыл бұрын
@@_MikeJon_ ahhh we absolutely love the PNW! So beautiful! I dont think there's any difference at all between plastic and metal, we only went with metal for a really tight lid with all the critters we have here. It sounds like you are more advanced than us haha! We still just have this one metal bin and we recently added a plastic tumbler to kind of start comparing, but we've had great results with everything breaking down really well. We have tons of earthworms in our soil here too and our garden is in ground so when we go to plant our soil has continued to produce really healthy plants! We are coming up on just a year and still have a lot to learn and experience to gain, so we'll have to try out some of your methods! Really glad you came across the channel and that we could connect. Wishing lots of health for you and your garden!

@@BuildingHome oh goodness I have very many critters on my property as well. A frisky bunch of raccoons regularly breed in the trees right off of my back patio and they're quite a handful! Though the kits are quite amusing to watch when they fumble and tumble out of the trees in the summer. Then we have the opossums, feral cats and black bears to contend with. But yeah, a simple brick, dog and solar sensor lights have worked thus far so 🤞 I'm more new to the composting game rather than anything else. I've grown and studied mycology unprofessionally for years and that led me into gardening and studying soil. Composting is clearly the complement and foundation for many of those disciplines.
@BuildingHome
@BuildingHome 3 жыл бұрын
@@_MikeJon_ wow well I guess I need to count my lucky stars our raccoons aren't mating on our property but just passing through! 🤣 So amazing that you've taken an interest in mycology for so long, it's good for the soul to learn about the way our world works. I know pure mushroom compost goes for top dollar in our area! I hope you'll keep in touch with us as you continue to learn about compost, you certainly already have a leg up with so much fungi and microbiome knowledge! It's pretty amazing to watch your food scraps go back into the earth and help your plants grow instead of just throwing them in the garbage. I hope more and more people make composting a regular part of life!
