I sang this requiem in high school. We had a huge pipe organ at the cathedral where we sang it. I will never forget it.

This historic recording of "Johnny's Gone Marching" features Diane Biser as soprano soloist, Paul Appelgren as baritone soloist, and Christina Lynn at the piano, with Dr. George Lynn on the podium. Included in this choir (about 50 singers that included alums from both Westminster Choir College and Loretto Heights College) at the final (1979) Ghost Ranch Summer Choral Workshop were Larry and Diane Biser, Tom and Monica Sawyer, Don and Connie Branton, Olenka Riabec, Steve Mackey, Anna Wheeler, Gregory Gentry, Nelson and Linda Conway.

Ghost Ranch Choral Workshops continued under different leadership after George Lynn moved on to other projects.

I believe that I hear a beautiful high C by Anna Wheeler Gentry in that recording. My sister and I (Tina and Lorna Lynn) were in the choir too. Thanks for posting this!

Is this in the D major?

This performance seems to end with the lower basses on the C, second space up in the bass clef. I seem to remember that the score we sang from had the basses all on middle C (above the staff.)

I sang this arrangement around 1980 or so. Our conductor told us a story. Hall Johnson was riding in a cab in NYC, with a conductor, probably George Lynn (I can't remember). The conductor said, "Hall, I need a new arrangement of the S.S.B." Hall took a sheet of music paper out of his briefcase, and did the job on the spot.

Pure delight! I knew many of the people in this choir...wish I'd been there. And the conductor....incomparable!
