I was in the same boat. Didn't want to just aimlessly follow tutorials. I wanted the structure, someone telling me what to draw and when to draw it. I just paid for a drawing class. I'm still taking it and it's done wonders for exposing me to everything about drawing, identifying my strengths and weaknesses and coming out of it, will have more direction in what I need to focus on.

But I want to draw anime girls, and I see those lines you do with a ruler, and I hate rulers, I'm not so sure it will help me that much, or am I wrong?

Theres only one exercise with a ruler. Others are done by hand, drawabox will help you draw everything with more form, which yes, it will help you draw less flat anime girls.

Oh yeah gotta take it easy at first, I can remember the neck pain when doing drawing for hours. Then started drawing on a tilted surface, way better.

I feel like this course is going to be hell itself for me. As a perfectionist, I want everything to be perfect, but I think it will be good for me to learn to be a little less careful about my art.

I don't understand this "but it's final on ink!" point. Just like.. don't undo? Then it's still final. Unless you're concerned about people not having the commitment to not undo. Sure, digital tools are to "make things faster", but what's the actual difference if I draw on paper vs. tablet if I don't use fancy things like stabilization, undo, layers, or the like? That said my main issue with the "use fine liners" is that it just delays the step of getting used to the tablet. I'd rather get that out of the way earlier rather than later. And that's definitely a factor too. If I draw on tablet I still need to get used to it, liners on paper is more intuitive right off the bat and when I compare the two my liner lines are every so slightly better, and I overshoot less with those. But again, I need to learn that on tablet eventually anyway, so might as well get it out of the way. I get it could kill someone's motivation though, especially if they end up feeling like "I should buy a more expensive tablet" The one point that makes sense to me is that you can't submit it for feedback. I get they don't want to deal with digital for homework. Like, to properly rate the work you'd have to know the tools used, which would involve asking each student about it and knowing all the software and and and. And then the student might go "ah yeah, that's actually just my tablet being bad"

Hey:) if you want to get officially critiqued by the creator you will need to use paper and ink, but if you just wanna learn on your own feel free to use the tablet.

Draw a box recommends using Pen and paper because it is less forgiving than other media... The idea is that a mark made with a fineliner pen on a paper is permanent and easily visible. This way, you will think before making a mark and only do it when you're confident that you will do it right. I have done drawabox too... And even I thought that it was a bit ridiculous how much they stressed on using a fine liner pen and paper... But after I've completed it, I see the point.

Definitely not a better option in this case. But it’s worth the investment in a sketchbook and some fine liners if you really follow along

You can do the whole course for only 15-20 bucks (that's over several months too). Printer paper and fineliners can be bought fairly cheaply. A digital tablet will simply cost way way more than bulk paper and pens.

Thank you! I am a way better rapper/songwriter then draftsman, so I am pursuing that career, but I will still keep drawing because this is really fun. I may drop a video here and there as well.
