The TG16 failed because NEC had no idea what the U.S. audience wanted to play, If NEC had paid attention to what was selling millions of copies on the NES they could have had a cheat code for unlimited money. I understand that Nintendo's exclusivity clause hurt everyone but Nintendo, but NEC often got past that by licensing through 3rd party companies that they owned (like NEC Avenue), except they didn't use their licensing to bring out almost any of the biggest hits. Imagine how much better looking, and sounding (while playing the same) games like Castlevania, or Contra could have been, instead we got JJ and Jeff based off of a couple of Japanese comedians (ken and kato) and Keith Courage based off a Japanese anime that no one in the U.S. likely ever heard of.

I always really liked Castlevania 2. When I was a kid. And this game first came out, I loved all the secrets in the game. I felt the same way about Metroid and Zelda. Back then a lot of us kids were beating games separately but together at the same time. And yes I did get stuck sometimes but that was part of the experience back then. You have to remember, most kids only had about 4 to 10 games back then. So you wanted a game that lasted along time. I'm not saying the game is perfect, it definitely has it's issues. But I think the game's shortcomings have become exaggerated over the years. Anyway, thanks for showing me this cool hack, Bro.🤩👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️

Atari did not cause the crash, but they had a huge part in it. You are also correct in stating the crash did not happen across the pond. This was a north american thing. However, companies did take notice of what had happened. In Japan, they call it the Atari Shock. I go into some detail on this on my Nintendo video and the 10NES system.

I don't think Nintendo alone prevented another crash. The rise of video gaming magazines and video game rentals also helped consumers in navigating the gaming waters, therefore making better decisions on what titles to actually purchase. Even as a kid I knew to steer clear of the "WEIRD" looking NES carts.

Zelda II and Simon's Quest are flawed but in no way bad games. Zelda needed more check points where you start just outside the last town or palace you explore. Are you sure about the Lynx's 32-bit DAC for sound? Nobody, not even crazy hifi nuts, use 32 bits for sound, it's completely unnecessary, and the surrounding components wouldn't be able to keep up with the ridiculous Signal to Noise Ratio. Is there some special mode where you can hook up 4 x 8-bit DACs or something? Even then you'd likely hook it into being 2 x 16-bit, not 1 x 32-bit. It's insane, self-defeating, and wouldn't serve a purpose.
@gamingquarterly6353
@gamingquarterly6353 Ай бұрын
I got the info from Wikipedia. It says 4 channels x 8 bits per channel= 32 bits. You are right, I am sure it wasn;t used to full specifications. Maybe this was a situation like the Intellevision, which has a 16 bit CPU but was never fully utilized. thanks for the info. I know nothing about audio specs or underlying technology. 😁
@greenaum
@greenaum Ай бұрын
@@gamingquarterly6353 Nah, there's 4 separate channels with an 8-bit DAC each, giving 256 levels of sound. That's all, you can't combine them together to make 16 bits or anything. Their outputs are just mixed together to play at the same time. You could technically do the same with jst one DAC, and combine the values of your 4 channels together in software, just averaging the values out. But that's a lot of maths (well, not THAT much on a 16MHz CPU). So for whatever reason, they put 4 DACs in there. Because it was cheap enough, probably. Later changes apparently gave them volume controls so you could do stereo panning on the Lynx II. So, 4 x 8 bits, it doesn't make any sense to multiply them together, it doesn't correspond to the real hardware. Just 4 DACs, each playing it's own sound, together, independent of each other.
@gamingquarterly6353
@gamingquarterly6353 Ай бұрын
@@greenaum I see your point. Makes a little more sense now. I guess the Lynx placed them there for maybe future use, assuming the handheld got popular, allowing them to do more sophisticated sounds in later games? Who knows.
@greenaum
@greenaum Ай бұрын
@@gamingquarterly6353 I think they were there intended for use straight away and probably were used. The N64, for example, claimed hundreds of sound channels, all output through one DAC, mixing them using software like I described earlier. Obviously the N64 had a lot more CPU power than the Lynx, but the Lynx still had plenty. Then again, DOS games used to offer slower sound mixing rates on slower computers, around the time of the 386 and 486, so it's probably more difficult than I gave it credit for. So probably having 4 is an advantage for programmers, you just assign 4 sound channels to their own DAC each. It makes sense, really. Cuts down on processing. Also I've read some more, and the Lynx's sound wasn't just generated in software, it had sound-generating hardware using modified counter circuits, and those could output to the DACs too. Similar to the analogue sound channels on older consoles, but in this case generated entirely digitally, using digital circuits, then only turned to analogue by the DAC at the final stage. So it gives it digital synthesis. Using 4 separate generators would be a reason to have 4 DACs. They still could have mixed it all in the digital domain, then fed it to just one DAC (or two for stereo), but they decided one DAC per channel and do the mixing in analogue, after the DACs, instead. There probably wasn't a lot of advantage in one way over the other, so they chose for their own reasons.
