When I played this video for my GF, a philosophy major, she nearly fell off the sofa, holding her sides with laughter. Brilliant, smart comedy.

"if we didn't have crucifixion this place would be in a right bloody mess" Considering the state of a lot of places before the Romans showed up he's not entirely wrong. Say what you want about it but nailing a man to a cross sent a message about what was and wasn't tolerated by Rome.

Absolutely brilliant and many of us know all their sketches off by heart ... but how the hell did they come up with them in the first place ? Complete and utter genius if mildly fruitloop 🙂

The full episode of about 1/2 hour of this MP, with the Spanish Inquisition, is my favourite of them all. The usual collage of bizarre skits somehow just come together in this episode and something that has no business working, actually works, abstract as it is, into a cohesive whole. Not far, perhaps, from 10000 monkeys hitting various keys on keyboards that eventually, given enough time, come up with Hamlet. The common thread. You can do quite a bit with the common thread.

*The final part of this skit:* - How did you become king then? - The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I'm your king. - Listen, strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. - Be quiet! - Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you. - Shut up! - Oh, but if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away. - Shut up, will you? Shut up! - Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system. - Shut up! - Oh... come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed! - Bloody peasant! - Oh, what a giveaway! Did you hear that? Did you hear that, eh? That's what I'm on about. Did you see him repressing me? You saw it, didn't you? *FULL BREAKDOWN (by ChatGPT):* 1. *Absurdity of Authority:* The skit immediately highlights the absurdity of traditional systems of authority and governance. King Arthur's claim to the throne based on a divine encounter with the Lady of the Lake is juxtaposed with the common sense assertion by Dennis that true executive power comes from the consent of the governed, not from mystical ceremonies. 2. *Satirical Commentary:* The dialogue serves as a satire on the concept of divine right of kings and the idea that leadership can be determined through mystical or arbitrary means rather than through democratic principles. 3. *Role Reversal:* The exchange between King Arthur and Dennis subverts the typical power dynamic between ruler and subject. Instead of deference, Dennis challenges Arthur's legitimacy, highlighting the absurdity of basing authority on a singular, subjective event. 4. *Ridicule of Authority Figures:* King Arthur's frustration with Dennis's insistence on democratic principles leads to his attempts to silence him, demonstrating the tendency of authority figures to suppress dissenting voices rather than engage in reasoned debate. 5. *Social Commentary:* The skit also offers social commentary on the nature of power and oppression. Dennis's cries for help and accusations of repression highlight the struggle of marginalized individuals against oppressive systems of authority. 6. *Humor Through Absurdity:* The humor of the skit arises from the absurdity of the situation and the juxtaposition of grandiose language with mundane characters and settings. The escalation of the absurdity, from Dennis's initial skepticism to his dramatic cries for help, adds to the comedic effect. Overall, the Monty Python skit uses humor to critique traditional systems of authority and highlight the importance of democratic principles and the consent of the governed.
