I was an inspector for buried fiber for 2 1/2 years. Original supervisor said red lines final drawings that are all red?! Second supervisor said Asbuilts, are as it's being built. Resident Engineer 30 years experience?! Said the same thing. This video is great!! Makes sense now redlines changes during construction. "As it WAS built" is an Asbuilt, not, as IS being built. When you pull all redlines together and original unchanged lines it becomes the Asbuilt. :-)
@SmartBuildingsAcademyАй бұрын
Yep, it's very important to not just redline but also to ensure that all of the redlines from the different trades and people get consolidated into the final "as-built" documents.

You are not a good instructor. Your process of explaining a subject is all over the place. There are so many errors during your lectures, which causes confusion.

Glad to hear from you, which specific errors exist so I can address them.

If I remember correctly this is Distech GFX that I used in this video. So you'd need to get access to their software most likely through a dealer or distributor.

Really like your content. Building automation/controls seems like one of the harder segments of the construction industry to get into as a full-time bas specialist; but I have done some of the it throughout my career as an HVACR technician and building engineer.
@SmartBuildingsAcademy3 ай бұрын
I don't see that on my end. Every customer I know is hiring and looking for talent. If I find someone who is semi skilled I know companies that will hire them in seconds. Too bad we aren't in the recruiting business.

I have been trying to catch up with the 400 plus podcasts from past years and its really cool that you are actively putting out new content for people like me. I work for an hvac contractor and in between drilling, cutting and taking phone calls I try to focus as much as I can on the controls basics in this series. In my local area you have to go pretty far up the ladder before you find someone who knows what bas or bacnet is- I see a lot of career potential

There is a ton of career potential. You can stay hands on or move into really complex computer work. I love this industry for the flexibility and opportunities it provides.

I am with a Niagara contractor. Over the last year we have mostly stopped using JACE and have transitioned to a "software JACE". We are using mini PCs running the Niagara server with BACnet routers and field device licenses. On small projects that would normally just have one JACE, the soft JACE gives us server functionality for essentially the same money.
@SmartBuildingsAcademy4 ай бұрын
Yes, this is where I see a lot of devices going. The cost of a machine to run a software image is SO cheap right now, it doesn't make sense to buy a supervisory device. Especially when you can also purchase USB to RS-485 cards for field busses.

@steamfitter60225 ай бұрын
I know you have a background in JCI, how does JCI get away with away with having multiple devices with a Device ID of 1 (same MS/TP Trunk)? It seems there is no issue on the NCE/NAE but as soon as we put a JACE on the network, we cannot discover the controller. It seems like JCI doesn't play by the BACnet rules
@SmartBuildingsAcademy5 ай бұрын
So it all depends on how the device is mapped in. Are you taking over a MS/TP trunk or are you mapping everything thru IP so you're discovering the NAE and it's field devices.
@steamfitter60225 ай бұрын
Can you cover BACnet over ARCNET integration? I feel like this is a huge integration gray area in the field

One of the things we experienced most in 2023 was coming behind folks that program in a verbatim manner per written sequence, but they do so with vendor specific blocks that make it difficult or next to impossible either follow or grab that brands module that contains that particular function block to make any revisions or even open portions of the station. I'm sure some folks would like to see scenarios where you display how certain brands (in your case WEBS) have pre-built blocks that make sequence programming more efficient, but compare this to strictly programming sequences with blocks that're default in every version of N4, or at least in the VykonPro Pallete. Speaking as a business owner (not to be selfish on requests :)...but my team would benefit greatly on showing some of efficiency gains to be had by using various function blocks to streamline their sequences. Things like lead/lag, sequencers, optimumStart/Stop, load shedding, rotational sequencers, or even writing out their own block with the program service.
@SmartBuildingsAcademy5 ай бұрын
Yep, I tend to teach the generic plain jane blocks from KitControl as much as possible but to your point each vendor has specific blocks that enhance programming. Some like PCT/CCT even have QA prompts that build your program. One of the more custom functions is the PCT/CCT State Table and MUX block. I love those but they are a bear if you don't understand that software.

Phil, I am just starting out in the BAS industry, and I have found your videos the best to watch and learn. You break it down so that even I can understand it. That's saying a lot. They used to say John Madden was able to break football down to a level that anyone could understand the game and enjoy it. Thanks for putting these videos out there. Much appreciated!!! 👍
