Yup, that was the ending the movie deserved, not the early 19th century nod to the patriarchy. And I say that as somebody who despises 3rd wave feminism, wokeness, modernity and so called progressivism. But it gets a pass because the time the play the movie was based upon was actually written it was subversive and ground-breaking -, so I guess the ending was an olive branch to the past.

The local Adventist University staged a production of My Fair Lady and they went with this alternative ending, which turns it into a great message for young women today: don't let yourself be treated like dirt. And for young guys: appreciate what you have and don't be a self-centered moron!

Meh. I like the theatrical ending. The thing is, they loved one another but being a confirmed bachelor, he didn't understand it until he was about to lose her. If Eliza left, that would mean she was hypocritical because she didn't understand him either, and she was judging him on who she wanted Him to be rather than seeing where he was coming from. They were both people who were a result of their class and culture, yet were outsiders. Her coming back was Eliza realizing that they were the same and could be happy together. This is why I keep saying that people who try to shove 2020 ideas down the throat of another era are always going to be ignorant and overly judgemental of things they don't understand. So, just stop doing it. It never works out. And just to put it up front, This is My opinion, which has a right to exist alongside everyone else's opinion. So, hopefully, instead of people coming at me the wrong way, I look forward to respectful, adult conversation if any are to be had over a disagreement with the other views in here

I wonder if Dame Julia had any flashbacks to the original London production in 1969/70 of "Mame", starring Ginger Rogers? Julia played Gloria Upson as well as providing her formidable soprano to the title song in that production. She can be seen (and very much heard) on KZbin as Ginger and cast appeared on the Royal Variety show in '69

Nice reunion for "Side By Side By Sondheim" stars Julia McKenzie (who sounds great) and David Kernan (who I imagine played Beauregard). It's a shame they didn't get Millicent Martin to be Vera, and Ned Sherrin as Gooch or maybe Mother Burnside.

I'll take the Lucille Ball version of Mame over Jessica Fletcher.

Mame is one of My all time favorite musicals and sadly there are only two major cast recordings available in the US! The splendid one with Angela Lansbury and the Soundtrack from the 74 Movie starring Lucille Ball! I keep hoping for a major revival,My choice for Mame PATTI LUPONE !!

That is how Shaw wanted the story to end. It was the theatre people who insisted on the romantic ending we have now.

Can someone tell me when this was. I was flabbergasted at the weak chorus sound. Where the hell is this? He deserved better! And, why, why couldn't someone who knew the voice, the science of the voice, have helped him?! I COULD HAVE HELPED HIM!

Reminiscent of Ibsen’s Doll House

Is this true, or an edit? I'm not sure the romantic music at the end really fit. The original Pygmalion play ended similar to this (but with Higgins in denial that she was really gone). It's kind of in parallel to Shaw's real-life attraction to actress "Mrs. Patrick Campbell" who left him to marry someone else. From what I understand, the film studio asked Shaw to change the end of the 1938 movie script to something happier, so he wrote a compromise solution, where she came back and then parted on amicable terms. (BTW, there's a video on KZbin that seems to do a similar compromise ending from a current Broadway performance of My Fair Lady.) However, the studio rejected that and filmed a different ending with her coming back, which was then used and musicalized for the ending of My Fair Lady on stage and in the 1964 film.

The actual ending was in the play...however after higgins belittled Eliza's return by asking where his slippers were, she bellowed at him and walked out much the same way as the Alternate presented. Shaw kind of didn't care for mushy romanticism .

Warner Bros should have this bowdlerised ‘ending’ taken down. Higgins follows this with one of the greatest of Lerner and Loewe’s songs ‘I’ve Grown Accustom To Her Face’ - it as Trevor Nunn said ago improves on Shaw’s Pygmalion by having Higgins show guilt, shame and remorse. Higgins does not self reflect and change as he does in the musical play. The quip about slippers at the end of the piece is called irony and Nunn had Eliza fold her arms and look askance at him. Nunn said they’d be together for a bit and then she would outgrow him.

I love the Seth Rudetsky jokes but seriously, she and Paul Gemignani must have decided that she couldn't do that E eight times a week because the revival score has the note down two half steps, in D instead of E.
